Historic Marine Housing In Quantico Lures Restorers

The United States Marine Corp. Base at Quantico, VA., is offering 58 prefabricated, porcelain-enameled steel, ranch-style houses with two or three bedrooms, originally erected nearly 60 years ago to provide homes for returning World War II soldiers, according to a report in  REALTOR® Magazine Online.  The homes are available to anyone who can demonstrate the ability to dismantle and move the 11-ton dwellings with their 3,300 parts and 4,000 nuts and bolts. These homes, known as Lustrons, were designed by architect Carl Strandlund and are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

So That's What That Siding Is?

I found it interesting to see your post as Minneapolis has about 3 or 4 of these modest sized porcelain enamel sided ramblers in a higher end area of town facing the lake. They're smaller in size compared to the neighborhood, but the porcelain enamel siding is quite a conversation piece. I wonder if they too were designed by the same architect and would be eligible for placement on the register of historic buildings. What on earth do you do if one of the siding pieces needs replacement?

Lustron Homes!!

Lustron homes were manufactured in Columbus Ohio. I have one blog entry about Lustron... and have done research for a second entry....

I learned what Lustron Homes were on RealTalk when I first joined.
