An incorporated city east of San Diego, with Freeways I-15 and I-8 within it's boundaries, La Mesa is a great suburban community with a population of 54,700 according to the 2000 census. Downtown San Diego is minutes away (without traffic) yet La Mesa has a small town feel complete with a downtown shopping district. This historic shopping district has been expanding with several new businesses since the expansion of the Civic Center area which includes a new fire station and soon to be completed police station.
Many new eateries and personal services have joined the antique shops which were the main-stay for many years.
Most available housing within the area of La Mesa is in the lower to middle income price range. Homes ranged in prices starting with a studio priced at $66,900 to a home listing at more than $1 million in this weeks Multiple Listing Service.
La Mesa was honored as a "Playful City USA" a recognition from a non-profit organization, "KaBOOM" and "qubo" a television and on-line service for children. The criteria for receiving this recognition is having made a commitment to recognize the need for children of the city to play. With its 14 parks La Mesa has made a commitment to community wellness and being a healthy city.
Last November voters of La Mesa approved Proposition L, which will increase the local sales tax by 3/4%, to continue the present level of city services.
Popular recreational facilities include Mission Trails Regional Park, one of the largest regional urban parks in the United States, which boundaries include Murray Reservoir Park. Sports, hiking, boating, family parks from tots to adults. The city has arrainged various walks and hikes throughout the city and their parks and can be found easily through their Parks Department website.

I love La Mesa. I purchased a property in the Mt. Helix area in November. What I enjoy most is the quiet and bucolic atmosphere that it offers while at the same time being close to a major metropolitan.
