Residential Solar Electric Power

Solar Power for Your Home

The future is here, now. Solar electric power for the private residence is feasible and viable. San Diego is a prime area for converting to solar electric because of the amount of sunshine throughout the year. Even in coastal areas, where morning cloudiness or spring time gray skies typically block out the sun shine, new systems are efficient enough to pay for themselves. The new systems are so efficient, even the famous “May Gray and June Gloom” still provide enough sunlight to produce electricity.

The systems are quite costly, but when making an investment in the future, concerning your cost of living, value of your home, tax base and the environment for all Americans and your descendants, how much is too much. The cost of the system can be paid through a FHA Solar Loan. Most private companies that provide the services of selling and installing solar systems for residential customers have on-line calculators to show the cost and projected savings. Their sales people will happily explain all the details and answer any questions.

A solar electric producing system becomes an asset to your home increasing its value. Not only do your electric bills decrease, allowing additional funds to be directed towards paying off the system loan; it becomes a sales promotion better than a new kitchen or bathroom.

With the proper sized system, you will significantly reduce or eliminate your electricity costs from your utility company (SDG&E). Present day legislation has provided that utility companies must credit users for extra electrical power produced from their private systems. When your solar power system makes more electricity than your home uses, additional power is sent out to the power grid. This makes your electric meter run backwards, earning you credit to be spent during the night when your system isn’t producing power.

EXISTING RESIDENTIAL HOMES
SDG&E is working with others to provide solar energy systems and other energy saving
home improvements to residents, including income-qualified customers and those in affordable housing communities. Residents and affordable housing developers,
that meet certain state guidelines and other program requirements, are eligible to
receive financial incentives for solar energy systems through the California Solar
Initiative and no cost energy-efficiency measures from SDG&E. For more information,
Contact SDG&E's Energy Team at 1.866.597.0597 or visit www.sdge.com/energyteam.
Moving forward with solar Energy-Efficiency
Making your home or business more energy efficient is the first step we recommend before installing a solar energy system. This will help you save money on your energy bill, conserve natural resources and reduce the need for new power plants. SDG&E has many energy-efficiency rebates and incentives available for your business and home.
Interconnection Services with SDG&E
SDG&E has established a streamlined process to connect solar electric systems to the utility’s grid. Safety and reliability are of paramount importance as the company oversees this process from start to finish. For more information, go to www.sdge.com/pv.
Electric rates for solar customers
Residential and business customers installing solar can take advantage of Net Energy Metering which allows eligible customers to receive credits for excess energy produced by their solar systems, then “bank” the credits for up to 12 months to offset their electric bill. In addition, SDG&E offers special rates which may be beneficial to both residential and business customers with solar.
California Solar Initiative (CSI)
The state of California offers a $3 billion incentive program for those wanting to ‘go solar.’ There are three administrators for CSI in SDG&E's service territory:
1. The California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) administers existing residential homes and existing and new commercial projects, as well as industrial, agricultural and multi-family affordable housing properties.
For more information, please call 1.866.733.6374 or visit www.sdenergy.org.
2. Grid Alternatives will administer the single family affordable housing program commencing in early 2009.
For more information, visit www.gosolarcalifornia.com.
3. SDG&E administers residential new construction projects through the New Solar Homes Partnership.
For more information, please call 1.866.631.1744 or contact newsolarhomes@sdge.com.

I will provide further details, of Green Topics which can provide homeowners with several benefits, in future blog postings.
