Nov. 26, 2007 - Best Feature Seen in A Home
|
El Dorado Hills, CA - On tour I often see features in a home that really make me stand up and take notice. The other day though, the question came up as to what would be the best feature I have ever seen in a home? The best would be hard to pinpoint. I do have a few favorites though which, coincidentally, all center around warmth. (Maybe that's due to the current time of year, fall/winter!) Though I've never had one in any house I've lived in and very seldom see the feature used, I absolutely love seeing a fireplace in the kitchen or dining room. It adds so much charm and warmth, literally. In an early blog that I called "Best of the Best", I wrote about a home in Shingle Springs that had a wonderful fireplace in the nook which double-sided to the dining room. Shea Homes, located inside the guard gates of Upper Serrano, has a floor plan that features a double-sided fireplace in the dining room backing to a "Hearth Room" as they call it, or as I would describe it, a library or sitting room of some type.
Right along with the fireplace in the eating areas would be a fireplace in the Master bathroom. Also rarely seen, it just says 'wow" to me. Of course if I had one, it would have to be gas so that it would be easy to use and not messy.
Another favorite, which I actually do have first hand experience with is heated flooring in the bathroom. There is nothing like it in the colder months when I'm getting ready for the day in the morning or ready for bed at night. My husband loves not getting up in the middle of the night to use the rest room and being shocked awake by the ice cold tile floor. It is something that doesn't require extra space and can be put in at any time. If you're considering a remodel or are just building, treat yourself to this feature and if possible, your family and guests as well.
I'm really curious though as to what features other people consider to be the best. What is a great feature you've either had in a home you lived in, seen in a home you've been in, or designed into a home you've built? Please leave your comments here or if you're too shy, email them to me at driley@golyon.com. I'd love to see what ideas are out there and what to look for on tour.

Nov. 19, 2007 - Beautiful Gated Estate in Rescue*
Rescue, CA - Tour day was an especially busy day for me this week so when I decided on which houses to visit, this home wasn't on my list. Luckily for me a few other agents I saw on tour had been to see it and sparked my curiosity so much I rearranged my schedule to fit it in. This is an amazing house with a beautiful setting on a 5 acre (horse property) lot. Situated between El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park in Green Springs Estates, it truly looks like an estate. The development is gated as well as the property. As I entered the property gate at the top of the road, I gazed past an expansive, gently sloped lawn sprinkled with a few evergreens and mature native oaks to the house. Off to the right, I could see an unattached 3-car garage with a guest house (900 sq. feet) built on top and beyond that a tennis court. As I got to the bottom of the driveway, I could see that the house had another 3-car attached garaged. Around the back of the house, I found an incredible 1200 square foot, edgeless pool with a waterfall, a swim up bar, and a cave that you can swim into and once inside find benches to sit on. From the pool. as well as from the whole back of the house you have views to the east that include the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The grounds were mesmerizing, but I finally made my way around the front, up the steps, and into the entry of the house. It was built this year with just over 5000 square feet that includes 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, an office, and a solar system that generates most of the home's electricity. It has a craftsman feel with it's simple, clean lines in the cabinetry, built-ins, and wainscoting, and a warmth about it from the use of brick fireplaces (including one in the kitchen/nook) and the extensive use of wide plank, yellow pine flooring. The kitchen is quite spacious and gourmet, has granite slab counters with an eating bar, that fireplace I mentioned, and stainless steel appliances. All the baths have travertine showers and floors.
One more bonus for this horse property development is that it has no Mello Roos. This amazing home is offered at $1,495,000 $1,295,000 which in my mind is not only a best find but a great value for such an estate. If I didn't love my own view and know my current home is already too big for me I'd be tempted. As always, call or email me for more information on this home or if I can help you find more like it in our area. (This home sold 3-7-2008.)

Nov. 11, 2007 - Best New Homes - Folsom
|
Folsom, CA - I spent this afternoon looking at John Laing Home Communities in the Folsom area and am so impressed. There are currently three new home communites: Outlook and Hideaway at Treehouse, and Marbella at the Parkway.
The story goes that in 1848, John Laing's father built his first home in the English Countryside and not too long after that John Laing Homes began. Customer satisfaction is important to them and, they believe, key to their longevity. They were recently ranked at the top in this category by J.D. Power and Associates. They were also named America's Best Builder by the National Association of Home Builders.
In all three communities there is a common theme of very workable floor plans and great use of space. Something almost all the homes have is the laundry room located on the same floor as the bedrooms. The communites are all conveniently located, reasonably priced, and have great curb appeal.
Both Outlook and Hideaway are at Treehouse where the idea was to make you feel like a kid again yet have all the amenities a grown-up could want. They are located in a naturally wooded area that gives them a very quiet secluded feel even though they are close to the Folsom Outlets and the new shopping centers and eateries on East Bidwell. There are pockets of open space and treed areas in and around the community and a cross country trail nearby where you can go for a run or take a quiet walk.
Outlook at Treehouse are condominium units with 7 floor plans modeled all named after birds. They range in size from 1115 to 1377 square feet. There are two and three bedroom units with one and two car garages attached. There is one single level model and the rest have the bedrooms upstairs.
Hideaway at Treehouse are two story homes with three and four bedrooms and two car garages. There are three models, named after trees, that range in size from 1686 to 1930 square feet. There is one model that has a bedroom downstairs with the other two upstairs and the rest have all the bedrooms up along with the laundry rooms. They are quite unique in that the garages are on the back side of the house and the homes open to a court-yard like common area.
There are 4 models to choose from at Marbella ranging in size from 1712 to 2143 square feet, with three and four bedrooms. They are all two story with the laundry room and bedrooms upstairs. Built with the same idea as Hideaway the two car garages are all at the back of the homes leaving the front for the home's charming design.
There are some really great deals now in new home construction especially as we near the end of the year. Some things to keep in mind when shopping for new homes: Though there are agents on site, those agents are working for the builder so it is still a good idea to have an agent represent you as a buyer. Most of the builders require you to have your agent with you when you first register with them. Please call or email me if you aren't currently working with an agent as I would love to represent you, help you negotiate your purchase, and be there with you throughout your home buying process.

Nov. 6, 2007 - Best Event -Bottle Your Own Wine
|
Fair Play, CA - Many years ago (at least 8 or 9 anyway), I stumbled across an ad in our local Village Life newspaper about a "Bottle Your Own Wine" event at Charles B. Mitchell Vineyards over Veterans' Day weekend. It was a couple weeks off and sounded so fun. I suggested it to our neighbors and my husband and we all made the decision to go. When the agreed on day came, the excuses started to come up. I refused to let them renege on our commitment, however, and we had such a great time my husband and I have gone ever since.
There are actually three of these events at Charles B. Mitchell Vineyards every year -over Veterans' Day, Presidents' Weekend, and 4th of July. At each one you'll usually have a choice of a white and a red wine that you can bottle yourself for a very reasonable $6-7 per bottle.
When you arrive you are given a tasting class (to keep) for $10 per person; or it is provided free for club members. Not only can you taste the wines available to bottle, but also "future" wines (fine wines that are still in drums waiting for their time to be bottled and released), and other wines they sell. There is always some kind of snack type food there as well. This weekend it happens to be soups and fresh breads. In the colder months there are patio heaters placed around to keep you cozy while you mingle and taste.
Once you've done enough tasting and made your decisions, you can begin your bottling. You can bring your own clean, recycled wine bottles to fill, or buy them there for an additional 85¢ each. Now that you have your bottles, you proceed through stations to fill them, cork them, seal the tops with a capsule, and label them.
Though we don't get to every one of the events, we go as often as possible, always dragging along whoever will go with us. And it's always a great time for everyone. It takes about 45 minutes to get there from El Dorado Hills, but the drive is beautiful and the experience is definitely worth the effort. It's a leisurely day thing so plan to be there 2-3 hours. If you make it there, let me know what you think.
This Veterans' Day event runs November 9, 10, 11, & 12 and is open 10:30-5pm daily, The winery is located at 8221 Stoney Creek Road, Fair Play, 95684. For more information go to their website at www.charlesbmitchell.com or call 800-704-WINE.

Nov. 3, 2007 - Beautiful Santa Barbara Style Custom in Francisco Oaks *
El Dorado Hills, CA - I loved this home the first time I saw it a few months ago. I re-toured it again recently and can't believe it is still not sold. It's the nature of the market, I suppose. Fashioned in a Santa Barbara style and built in 2004 in the charming Francisco Oaks neighborhood on .41 acre, it is approximately 3850 square feet, has 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. The cabinets throughout are handcrafted with a dark brown stain adding to the home's coziness. The kitchen includes granite slab counters and stainless appliances. The oak tree studded backyard is beautifully landscaped with a built in pool/spa and a dramatic waterfall that spills from an upper level patio just outside the kitchen, to the lower level where you find the pool and more patio area. There is actually a view of Folsom Lake as well from the Balcony off the master bedroom. It is offered at $949,000 $874,000. This home sold 5-12-2008.

Nov. 2, 2007 - Best Place to Proclaim Your Joys & Sorrows- The Rocks
| El Dorado Hills, CA - If you're heading north on El Dorado Hills Blvd and happen to see two big rocks off to your right with graffiti on them, you've come across an El Dorado Hills icon. There is quite a story behind them that began in the spring of 1999 when my son was playing baseball at Oak Ridge High School. While poking a little fun at our JV coach at the time, a couple of the players, I'll not name, decided to mimic a phrase the coach often used. In the middle of the night, with flashlights and paint in hand, they trekked up a big hill, to a huge rock that was originally located down the Boulevard and across the street where now stand apartments; and wrote their message. As it was definitely not easy to get to, the rock stayed that way for quite a while. Evenutally, others would make the trek up the hill and the message would change from time to time. The rock began to be a voice for residents and sometimes opposing sports teams. When the construction was to begin on the apartments, a teacher at one of our local schools saw it's value and did what it took to get that huge rock moved to its present location. Now being easier to get to, messages on it changed much more frequently; sometimes a couple times a day. In September of 2000, after 9-11 happened, an unknown artist painted the United States flag on the rock in honor of the victims. Time stood still for the rock for weeks as no one wanted to be the one to paint over our flag. Again, the concern for a place to voice came up, and again the problem was solved by bringing in another huge rock, not easily I can imagine. Eventually, the flag on the original rock was painted over. Now sit the two huge rocks, always with some kind of message. Sometimes it's a birthday message and sometimes it's a sad good-bye. There's even been a replica of Iwo Jima painted on it by a dear friend of mine. Regardless, every time I drive by, I can't help looking at them to see what's there, as you never know. |

Nov. 2, 2007 - My Best Real Estate Advice
|
I recently posted this to My Other Blog on Active Rain but since it includes that "best" word, I decided to post it here under my new category, Best Stuff as well. This advice comes not only from my time as a Realtor here in El Dorado Hills but from my many years as a homeowner.
Many times people wait till they need to sell their homes to fix it up. I'm guilty myself. Three years ago when we were selling our home here in El Dorado Hills, we finally added some paint to our stark white walls and took down the fluorescent lighting so popular in the early 90's. We liked it so much it made us question, "Why didn't we do this before now?"
So my best advice is not to update your home for the next buyer. Do it for yourself in stages and enjoy it till that time comes when you decide to sell. Start with your kitchen and master bedroom/bath. These rooms make the biggest impact and where better than the places you begin and end your day. Take down the wallpaper. Though you may hear it's coming back, they are not referring to the flowery styles we use to have. Talk to your painter about the new techniques they have for painting over it instead of trying to remove it. Replace your florescent lighting. With every project, use the best quality materials you can afford. It will pay off in the long run, and remember you're doing this for yourself.
Do-it-yourself projects are ok as long as you're working within your capabilities. Larger, more complex projects should be done by professionals so that your investments add to your home's value. If you do hire a professional following these tips could save you a lot of problems.
-
Get referrals from people you know and trust.
-
Check contractor licenses through the Contractors License Board.
-
See some of their work first hand.
-
Keep a regular eye on all the detail or you risk not getting what you thought you were. (The earlier you identify and communicate a problem, the better for everyone involved.)
Our homes are most often our biggest investment and where we spend most of our time. Updating it regularly not only increases its value, but allows us to love where we live.

Welcome to my Best of the El Dorado Hills weblog! The Hills I refer to here are the foothills east of the Sacramento Valley. My inspiration for this blog came as a result of my Real Estate profession where touring homes and knowing the inventory are some of the best parts of my job. Though my predominant intention here is to tell you about the homes for sale that have wow’d me, I also want to include what I consider to be among “other bests” of living in this wonderful area. You can search by categories, by clicking on the links below, or click on a tag word under one of my postings for more blogs about that subject. The prices shown on each blog is as of the date written. I'll try and update them when time allows. Please keep in mind that sometimes the pictures don't do a home justice, but they are what the listing agent has submitted to the MLS and what I have to work with. For more pictures or information on any of these postings or for help in locating similar homes available in our area, please contact me by clicking on the “Email Me” link below. Be sure and check out My Favorite Links for more helpful sites. Blog postings with * following the name indicate that the home has been sold and is no longer available.
