Why Waiting is a Useless Place

Dec. 23, 2007

One of my favorite children’s books is Dr. Seuss’s “Oh the Places You’ll Go!” It is filled with funny motivational anecdotes encouraging kids to do something positive with their life. One place that Dr. Seuss describes as “useless” is “the waiting place…”  Whether people are waiting for “the phone to ring, the snow to snow, or waiting around for a Yes or a No or waiting for their hair to grow,” Dr. Seuss exhorts his young readers to escape to the “bright places where Boom Bands are playing.”

Today, I’m noticing many  people in the real estate market stuck in the waiting place. People are waiting for “prices to fall, the market to bottom out,” etc. This is a useless place indeed. Except in rare instances, people in communities like Balboa Island are only going to sell their homes when they receive a fair price. Most owners have substantial equity in their homes and generally take them off the market rather than reduce the price more than is reasonable.

Balboa Island is indeed one of the “bright places.” Our own boom bands play here every year on Island Pride Day in June and homes maintain their value better than anywhere I know. That being said, there is a wonderful assortment of well priced homes for sale right now and smart buyers are no longer waiting.

Have you been stuck in a useless waiting place? Stop by our office at 315 Marine Avenue and let us know or e-mail me at donabrams@sbcglobal.net. We look forward to hearing from you.
