Using grownup words

So you want to use grownup words? 
This was a question I asked my friend the other night in discussing home ownership and the real estate process. I had recently shown him some new marketing materials which I was sending out to prospective clients and he asked about a few words on this postcard which I tend to use on a daily basis, but he didn’t really know what they were. Words like escrow and equity, which roll off many Realtor’s tongues, but are this vague “grownup word” as my friend liked to call them. While I could become Webster in this and describe these scary terms to the internet masses, I thought about his comment and the fact that a real estate transaction can be frightening to the younger generation. Being a member of this younger generation frightens me as well, but being a young homeowner does not have to be scary. 
I bought my own home a few years ago and truly learned more about selling real estate in that month then in my previous years in the business (sorry previous clients). The emotional rollercoaster that can be a real estate transaction finally hit home and I think that it changed me into a better agent. I recently closed on a transaction with a young couple who started calling me Yoda, as if I was this wise old being who was heading off any problems in advance. The fact that I was maybe a year older then both of them added to the humor, but it went without saying that as the wise old Realtor, I was able to make the transaction less scary. How? By simply meeting with them before the process started, answered any questions they may have had, and keeping them in the loop as the process was progressing. Simply treating them as intelligent students to a new process enabled me to seem wise, and they were totally at ease with this difficult transaction. A little bit of communication can go a long way.
