Every time I boot my HP Vista Ultimate, it tries to install Windows Installer, which it cannot do. When I log off, the messge is that Windows Installer Service could not be found. Anyone else having this problem…I have looked in Googls, HP Help, etc., but still have the problem

Here's Microsoft's answer as to how to troubleshoot the issue and narrow down why you're having the problem:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Here's the answer for an XP machine:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346
Which may or may not work on your Vista.

Here's a forum in which a couple of solutions are presented:

Are you logged into Windows as an Adminstrator?

You can get instructions to manually install Windows Installer here:

If you can't solve the problem, you might want to consider Matthew Ferarra's Tech Hotline. Only $24.95 per call and if they can't fix it you don't pay. Worth it just to avoid the frustration. ;-)

When the Windows Installer keeps coming up like that, it is an indication that you had an aborted software installation of some kind. If you have recently tried to install something on your computer and had problems, the software likely left the installation open --- even if it seems you successfully installed the program. Re-install the product and let it run the full installation and that should solve your problem.

I think there's a little more to it than this....as it seems that all of a sudden, a LARGE number of users are having this "Windows Installer" problem, myself included - just started about a week ago, and I'm wondering if there was some sort of Microsoft automatic update that's caused the problem. Maybe an attempt to eliminate pirated software? My problem ia with Excel - can't open it....and can't locate my original disk, which is how I originally installed it, so I'm having trouble accessing my SOI database.

Maybe that is the way to go.
The competition in computers is so harsh to make a profit all the brand companies like HP, Dell, Gateway and so on are cutting corners. Especially the lower ends have only a live span of 1 1/2 to 2 years according to my computer guy.
My computer has been build from scratch with good parts and is now about 8 years old. Early next year I let build a new computer with W7 and MSN professionals 2007. My builder and I will sit together and make a selection of the parts we want to be in and last but not least I will have two monitors set up.

I have been doing exactly that right after my first computer died for no apparent reason many years ago. I would miss having a floppy disk though for quick backup of small data for example to take to accountant... I now email to him or use a jump drive. No point in burning small files to a CD.
I have cassette hard-drives (3) built into the system for back up purposes. Just lock in the drive and Ghost complete info. Have used this system for years and really rely on it.

Question: why will you have two monitors, RG ?

Good question.
I do not like to minimize files to go to another one. It happens often that I am working on two or three different folders or attaching files. And today's video cards let you easy work on more monitors.
My experience goes way back to 1985 when I worked as a design engineer and used the software's AutoCAD and MicroStation Intergraph and I had in front of me two 19" monitors.
