Over time, I have accumulated 3 websites; one that I have had for 10 years (maybe more), one that I launched 2 years ago specifically for green homes and info, and a third that my company provides.

My question is: should all three domain names point to just one website that I would combine all the information in? Or is it better to have more than one, each for a different market segment.

My advice would be to look at the investment you're making on the three sites. If each one is paying for itself in terms of revenue generated, that's good.

It's usually most effective to have websites that are focused on a specific target market. If the sites are paying for themselves, and if they're all targeted at different markets, then it's probably a good idea.

If they're not paying for themselves, then I think that combining two or all three would be the best idea. You can then put all of your resources into one excellent website, that targets the most productive market, and does a great job of ranking on the search engines and attracting leads - as opposed to splitting your resources and money in three directions.

Janie, if you can find the time to occasionally add some new content to all three sites, you are much better off keeping all three. I have three including a company site that we are required to pay a monthly fee for. The other two are geared for different keywords, one for 'real estate for sale' and the other for 'homes for sale'. Leads from the 'homes for sale' site are much better than the 'real estate' site but far fewer. It seems like the term 'real estate' covers too broad of an area and you get a lot of hits as well as time wasting leads. If you do decide to point two of the domains to the third site, just be sure that you set up the 'pointing' properly so it doesn't look like three 'duped' (duplicated) sites whereby the search engines don't know which is the real McCoy and penalize them all. Also, a site that is 10 years old can be very valuable and some day when you decide there is more to life than real estate, you should be able to sell it to another agent if it doesn't have your personal name in the URL and if it has a decent pagerank. Since my company site has the IDX, I no longer need to have sites hosted that offer IDX like Advanced Access or even participate in handshake listings (P2 sites) because I simply navigate the consumer away from two sites to the IDX on my company site if they click on the Search Listings tab or put the IDX page in an iFrame.
