 Anti Virus Program

I looked and couldn't find a recent discussion on this. I have to replace my anti virus program (credit card expired) and before I automatically renew with Norton, I thought it would be a good time to explore my other options.

Does anyone have any comments on anti virus programs that they particularly like or don't like? I really need to do this ASAP so any response would be greatly appreciated!

Try AVG, it's free and about a hundred times better than the paid ones. www.avg.com

I have had nothing but problems with Norton. I went with AVG. Works great,
simple, not a problem.

Try Trend Micro. Not the memory hog that Norton and McAfee are. Use the
free AVG, even though I used it for a while and some virus's got through
AVG. Probably got what I paid for!

Barb, you might also want to watch out for spyware.

I use Ad Aware's free version at http://www.lavasoft.com and it has been great.
The paid version has real-time protection and auto-scans setup.

Spyware can be just as bad as viruses!

I use McAfee. It works fine and it is free when you subscribe to MSN.

As a matter of fact, since we have 9 PCs and laptops the savings is substantial. If a boxed retail copy of McAfee costs $40, it would cost $360 annually for our machines. The annual retail subsciption for MSN is $140, and would cover all of the machines.

But, the icing on the cake for me is that MSN is included with my Verizon FIOS service so my net cost for an antivirus is zero.

Enjoy

Has anyone tried Windows Live One Care? A computer software tech recommended it to me the other day. Norton 360 was taking a lot of resources on my computer and really slowing it down.

I also use AVG - I am not a Norton fan at all ---- I was a IT Director in my other life and Norton caused quite a few problems for us.

Stan Mitchem asks:

Has anyone tried Windows Live One Care? A computer software tech recommended it to me the other day. Norton 360 was taking a lot of resources on my computer and really slowing it down.

Mark Jay answers:

I've used Windows Live One Care since it was a free beta…actually I seem to remember you could use it for 6 months at no cost… and then upgraded to the paid version. I saw it last week in retail packaging at Office Max for $24.00. You can download it from the MS site for around $50.00. I still think there is a free trial period. It works flawlessly. It also has an excellent back up routine… all you need is an external hard drive. Last week… again at Office Max… I saw Seagate 500 meg external hard drives for $89.00. Buy two and alternate daily.

I've never been able to understand why more people don't use Live One Care. It should be a "no brainer". Wouldn't you think that the MS engineers working in the Live One Care area would have better and more complete access to the OS engineers to be "firstest with the bestest"? Wouldn't MS want to have the very best solution given the beating the company has taken pre-Vista over security issues? Why would anyone think that Norton or Symantec or the "freebies" be better?

By the way, you can install One care on up to 3 Machines. I don't think you can beat it for value and excellence in execution. It is NOT a resource hog… you won't even know it's there from that point of view.

Here's a good link… http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/3/communications/tokentrial.htm to get you going...

Barb,

I recently suffered a virus/spyware attack and Norton did not even detect it. I have switched to the free version of AVG and Malwarebytes. You can download both at http://www.download.com
