I am a Mac person and have always had a PC too.
I have a PC because there is not tech support
for our MLS and well, you know how it is.

Because of this list I am going to buy a Mac Powerbook
in the next 60 days or so. I have a desktop and it's been
about 4 years since I bought a new one and I want to
get one before I wish I would have. PLUS you guys
have given me total confidence that I can run VMFusion
and be happy.

I am extremely open to comments on when and what
I should buy. If something new is coming I can wait
until just after the 1st of the year. I want a laptop
so I can take classes at the Apple Store, but generally
I do not carry my laptop around with me. I like to travel
light.

Thanks in advance,
Debbie Golden

Debbie, unless you really need a Powerbook, I would advise getting a
desktop. I have had both and find that you get so much more Mac for your
money with a desktop. Plus, a lot of processing "juice" goes to the
monitor on Powerbooks or MiniMacs since they don't have true video
cards, so you get somewhat less speed than in a comparable desktop. I
hate to see you lose the advantage since you apparently don't really
need a laptop.

For example, the most powerful MacBook with 13.3" screen and 2GB RAM is
$1488 at my dealer.

I'm currently using a 24" iMac that was $1788 before I had 2 GB
additional RAM added. It truly SCREAMS!!! I can run all my power-hungry
programs such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash and Windows all at once,
and have so much room on this huge, billboard-like monitor that I can
keep Mac windows and Windows open side by side. I'm currently working on
two Photoshop files; one is 83mb and the other is 143 mb and both
process instantly, in spite of the fact that I have some 18 other
programs running too.

Why not ask your store if you can use one of their Macs for lessons? Or
skip the lessons altogether as you should be able to easily make the
switch from Windows to Mac, just as I easily learned to work on Windows
after many years of using Macs. There's relatively little difference
except that the Mac's command (Apple) key and option key substitute for
Windows control and alt keys.

By the way, PowerMax.com is a great dealer! We've bought all our Macs
from them for the last 8-10 years. Salesman Joe Inman is a great help
with making decisions about what to buy to match our needs.

Also, be sure to buy an extended warranty before your first year of
ownership is up. Apple won't let you buy one if you're even one day past
your 1st anniversary. The extended warranty especially important for
Powerbooks, but I would buy one for any Mac.

Any questions, don't hesitate to give me a call (I'm in the Pacific time
zone.)

That's one of the questions I was going to ask. My BB contract is almost up and I can go in and get an I-phone.

Am I correct in understanding that you can download podcasts? and other things into the phone and use it like an I-pod?

If any of you are using an Iphone...give us the pros and cons, Thanks.

----------------------------

Yes, you can download podcasts and use the i-Pod features all you want with your library of music.

And an iPhone would pay for itself on your first listing presentation!

1. It comes with the Safari web browser built right in. When sellers say, "So where will you be advertising my house?", you could pull out your iPhone and go right to your web site at http://www.moveuptonaperville.com to show them right at their kitchen table where their property will be featured on your site. "See Bob and Mary - when you list with me, I can have your home up on my web site in the next 24-48 hours! So I just need your authorization here on my marketing agreement and we can get started tonight!" (No need to drag your laptop with you or hope they have wi-fi at their house to demonstrate your web site.) The "coolness" factor alone should help you to get the listing!

2. If your MLS is offered on the Web, you can even search properties right there on your iPhone. Drive by a property that you didn't know about? Just pull over, go to MLS on your iPhone and find it right then and there.

3. With additional 3rd party applications now available, you can even find local restaurants and other places right on your iPhone. I used to think it wasn't a ratified contract if it didn't have ketchup or a pizza stain on the paperwork. So when a buyer had found THE HOUSE, rather than trying to keep them "hot" as I drove them all the way back to the office to start filing out their offer and other papers, I always volunteered that perhaps we should find a local restaurant where we could get a refreshment and discuss that last home in more detail. It made a much more relaxed situation for me to "close them". So now I can find places I am not that familiar with right on my iPhone that I could take them to.

4. In speaking with another iPhone user when I bought mine, she told me that the GPS on her iPhone was better than the GPS system in her Lexus!

Hope that gets the creative juices flowing for you.

Eileen asks:

Andi replies:

We have had an iPhone for several months now. There are some great things about it and there are some not so great…

It is pretty intuitive to use and all the graphics are cool. The built-in mapping function, text capability and stock look-ups are also great. It will work as an iPod and you can download your music to it.

The not so great includes the keyboard - I am not able to use "thumbs" with it, and it definitely doesn't work by just tapping with your fingernails. A problem if you have long nails. There has been a problem with it hanging up on the caller if you move your head just the right way. But the biggest issue has been when the phone itself just wouldn't respond. We had to go to Apple once and get a reset. After that we had to re-enter all our contacts. Our brother-in-law has a new 3G and he has had the same issue. BOOOO!!!

We don't use it to it's full potential I'm sure. We haven't downloaded any of the new apps. We don't use it for games. We don't use it as a camera.

And I haven't yet called IC to get them to help me figure out how to get my email to appear on the phone…. That is on the "to do" list…
