<as for the dead voting you never lived in Chicago.>
Most people on this list are not old enough to remember Johnson's first run for office in Texas. It was very controversial. One of the stories coming out of that election was about two politicians getting names for voter registration in the cemetery. One of them said, we have enough names, the other replied indignantly, we can't finish now, we would be denying all the others a vote. I know this story has been repeated many times about other election, however, the first time I heard the story, it was about Johnson.
I personally witnessed voting machine shenanigans in a Philadelphia primary election as a voting machine mechanic. All voting machines at that time were mechanical machines. Mechanical election machines after they are set up and certified (by the board of elections) do not break unless some voter takes a wrench to one of the voting levers on election day. Philadelphia had three different types of voting machines. I worked on the two types by one manufacturer. To make a long story short, at about 7PM I got call from the board of elections to fix two machines that did not work. What I found was that one lever on both machines was locked out. Coincidently the lever represented the same minority candidate and the two machines were in separate minority voting districts. Those two machines never worked all day long until I fixed them about an hour before the polls closed.
The Florida election of 2000 can be directly blamed on the individual boards of elections also for the failure of properly maintaining the functioning of the mechanical punches for the cards. I believe Florida now have all computer machines. The majority of the machines in New Jersey have computer machines also. I don't trust them. I will be voting with a paper ballot so that there is a written record of my vote in case a recount is required.
It is a shame that this great country has such a problem with honesty in elections and in politics and no stomach to fix them.
