Hi --
Fran Deen writes and says "remember the Dem's have a majority in those bodies. Bet Nancy Polosi and Harry Reid would not be too happy with that action. They've had control for the last two years but take responsibility for none of our problems."
Saul has raised the idea that having all three branches of government in the hands of one party is not a good idea. I generally agree -- but not this time because the government is radically off course. As well, when both parties had more moderates control was less of an issue. Instead there were various blocs that crossed party lines and often compromised. Think of Javitts Republicans or Henry Jackson Democrats.
The Republicans had control of the House, Senate and the presidency for the first six years of the Bush Administration. I do not believe there was a single Bush veto during this period. All three branches were in lock-step.
Also, "control" of the House and Senate for organizational purposes is not the same as sufficient control to override a Presidential veto.
As I have posted previously:
>>>For the current Congress the Democrats have an organizing majority -- but not a sufficient majority to override a veto. In the Senate, there are 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and 2 Independents who vote with the Democrats for organizing purposes.
>>>In the House, there are 233 Democrats and 202 Republicans.
>>>See Wikipedia.
>>>Given that President Bush has been elected to two terms is he not responsible for anything? If he is responsible for something, for what is he responsible? The biggest issues of our day are a demolished economy, two wars, rising unemployment, the astonishing growth of the federal deficit, our balance of trade, an expanding executive, the falling value of the dollar, a looming recession (if we are lucky) the nationalization of major players in the financial sector (which sure seems like Chavez-style socialism to me), etc.

All the best,

Editor's Note I think it might happen this cycle Peter, at least the Senate will be closer to control than the last few years, if the polls are accurate.Saul
