Peter Miller Writing/Editing

Date: October 24, 2008

Hi --

Fran Deen writes and says "remember the Dem's have a majority in those bodies. Bet Nancy Polosi and Harry Reid would not be too happy with that action. They've had control for the last two years but take responsibility for none of our problems."

Saul has raised the idea that having all three branches of government in the hands of one party is not a good idea. I generally agree -- but not this time because the government is radically off course. As well, when both parties had more moderates control was less of an issue. Instead there were various blocs that crossed party lines and often compromised. Think of Javitts Republicans or Henry Jackson Democrats.

The Republicans had control of the House, Senate and the presidency for the first six years of the Bush Administration. I do not believe there was a single Bush veto during this period. All three branches were in lock-step.

Also, "control" of the House and Senate for organizational purposes is not the same as sufficient control to override a Presidential veto.

As I have posted previously:

>>>For the current Congress the Democrats have an organizing majority -- but not a sufficient majority to override a veto. In the Senate, there are 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and 2 Independents who vote with the Democrats for organizing purposes.

>>>In the House, there are 233 Democrats and 202 Republicans.

>>>See Wikipedia.

>>>Given that President Bush has been elected to two terms is he not responsible for anything? If he is responsible for something, for what is he responsible? The biggest issues of our day are a demolished economy, two wars, rising unemployment, the astonishing growth of the federal deficit, our balance of trade, an expanding executive, the falling value of the dollar, a looming recession (if we are lucky) the nationalization of major players in the financial sector (which sure seems like Chavez-style socialism to me), etc.

All the best,

I think it might happen this cycle Peter, at least the Senate will be closer to control than the last few years, if the polls are accurate.Saul

I thought I was going to stay out of this but from what I read, you seem to
believe the Dems have not had a chance to show their metal so it's all the
fault of the Reps.

tOMe,

I sure took you long enough to get fed up and start posting!

I sure do miss the days when I could make this kind of post directly to the person and not waste everyone else's time.

Of course the Democrats have only held a majority for the last two years of
the eight... and that majority is inadequate to pass legislation that does
not also get some republican support as well, and certainly if Bush vetoes
the legislation the Democrats do not have enough of a majority to pass the
legislation... so no, in my view, the Democratic Congress has not had the
chance to show their mettle as yet... they need a larger majority... and I
hope they get it, so at least we can see how they run things, as compared to
years of a Republican Congress and a Republican President.
That is how I see it, Jim.
Have a great day!

The Democrats have held majority the last 2 years, and they have done
nothing really, except further divide the country. Actually, I guess do
noting legislatures are sometimes a blessing.

Like I said, last two years, and such a small majority as to make it
impossible to get much done... soon that will change, and to me, for the
better, I hope.

Have a great day!

I thought I was going to stay out of this but from what I read, you seem to

Let me ask you a question.
If Obama gets elected, who will be running the country for the next 4 years.
Let me give you some choices:
The majority leader of the House - Harry
The majority leader of the Senate - Nancy
The President of the United States - Obama
If I was a betting man, and I am, Obama would not be the one I would bet on.
Nancy, if things go the way they seem to be going, will have a veto proof
Senate. Will Obama veto a piece of legislation sent to his desk by Nancy?
Sorry, I just cannot see that happening.
Sure Nancy, Harry, and Obama will talk to each other by bipartisan
legislation will not happen.
A vote for Obama assures will guarantee us the most liberal 4 years this
country has ever seen. Our tax laws will be based on redistribution of
wealth so those with wealth will use the tools readily available to them to
shelter their money and prevent the redistribution.
Small Business, ones like ours, are the employers in this country yet their
taxes will go up just about the time they have an opportunity to contribute
to job growth.
Capital gains taxes will go up. Do you really think the rich will pay
higher capital gains taxes or will they too find a way to shelter their
money and keep it out of the overall economy?
A vote for Obama will put Nancy and Harry in charge of this country. Ted K.
will be given the task of creating a new Health Insurance program and he
will spend his dying breath (no pun intended) spending whatever it takes to
get that done. No matter what it looks like when it comes out of committee
it will get passed by both Houses and placed on Obama's desk. Do you think
for one minute that he will veto that bill even if he himself thinks it
sucks?
A vote for McCain will provide a little balance.
Me thinks I will vote for McCain, he has earned a shot at running this
country, Obama has NOT.
tOMe

Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House, and is not in the Senate.
Harry Reid is the majority leader of the Senate, not of the House.

Just want to get the facts right.

I look forward to a reasonable Presidency and government, unlike the one we
have had for the last 8 years. I can't wait.

Have a great day!

Saul responded:

You can with this application.

Saul,

When I got this e-mail from tOMe, there was no e-mail address from tOMe and only the links "View/Reply on the Web" and "Reply to Community". Yes, I could click on tOMe's link, but if there is no e-mail in a person's page, you can only go to the bottom and send them a message. That is an awful lot of steps for someone who just wants to say something quick and get on with things so they can get some work done! Any other quicker way. Back in the "old days" most regulars (including tOMe) included their e-mail addresses in their signatures (like I still usually do)

If you read what I wrote, you will see that there was a comma in between the
two, and between C. Powell and the others... it was a list... I am fully
aware that Powell was a Secretary of State. The Press Secretary was Scott
McClellan, whose name I could not remember at the time of that post... who
is also supporting Obama... that was already corrected previously... I
expect you just chose to forget that part...

Your attempt to make me look like I did not know what I was talking about
has failed, this time, as with your other attempts.

Have a great day!

Paul. The last 2 years they have been there is the worst of the 4 years in
our business and I am sure it trickled down to others, as note on the media
Glory Bee

But it was bad because Bush let industry take control of the government, and
deregulate and not enforce what regs were left... as with all things Bush...
the current situation has nothing to do with the last 2 years of minor
majority of Dems in the Congress... to think so is to turn a blind eye to
reality...

Have a great day!

If you recall during Bill Clinton's first two years was controlled by the Democrats. It wasn't until the Republicans gained control did we get capital gains reductions, welfare reform, etc. If those of you were in real estate when they changed the law to give people the $250-$500K exemption. That really accelerated real estate sales and release billions of dollars into the economy. I never personally cared for Bill Clinton the person, but with a Republican congress, in some regards he turned out to be a pretty decent president.
