A bizarre inquiry about custom site design

I always get lots of inquiries after one of my clients' sites is named "Site of the Month" in the Point2 Member Card, as http://www.RockiesWest.com was this week. But an inquiry I received today from a KW agent in Utahl really bowled me over; it's the strangest inquiry I've ever received. I've been chuckling to myself about it all day.

Here's how our phone call went:

Me: This is Suzanne Stephens. You contacted me about Web site design. How can I help you?

Her: "I just wanted to know how much you would charge to do a site exactly like the Rockies West site for me?"

Me: "Well, I can't do that because I license each client the exclusive right to use the design I create just for that client."

Her: "OK, I'll just call somebody else."

Me: "Why would you want to call somebody else?"

Her: "So I can get them to copy it for me."

Me: "You can't do that. It would be illegal because I own the design and licensed it only to RockiesWest for their exclusive use. Why don't you hire me to create a custom design exclusively for you; I'm sure you'd like it just as much?"

And from there, the conversation went downhill. However, I did refrain from asking her why she would want a site with the Rockies West logo, Royal LePage logo, and Flash slideshow of the Canadian Rockies (after all, she did say "exactly"). I have her email and her domain name. I'll keep an eye on her. Who knows, before too long she may be hearing from my copyright lawyer as well as Rockies West Realty's lawyer.

Still shaking my head...

Maybe it's the same agent I had to talk to about plagiarizing my web site.  Is she in OK by chance??

Thanks Judi. My custom designs seem to have the most impact on sites
that already have good traffic; on those sites, the agents see an
immediate and dramatic increase in both the number of and quality of
leads.

There must be a full moon or something weird as the strange inquiries
just keep coming. Today's winner:

"Hello, I am looking to creating a customized Point2 website, though I
am looking at reducing my marketing costs by performing the job
myself. I am technically savvy when it comes to computers, and have
created a few websites in the past. I was simply wondering how I would
go about fully customizing my Point2 website? For instance, where
would I past the code? And would it just overwrite the provided
template, or do I have to work with Point2 to eliminate the template?
Please get back to me as soon as possible. P.S., I love your work,
very professional and eye catching."

Though I was tempted to tell this person that he has brass cojones, my
[restrained] response was, "Please call Point2's Customer Service
Department at 866-977-1777." Maybe instead I should have written, "I
want to sell my house FSBO to save marketing money. Would you please
detail all the steps I need to go through and answer every question
that might come up?"

Melina, the inquiry came from a KW agent in Utah. I'm keeping my
copyright attorney's phone number close at hand!

As my Rockies West clients Wayne and Kim Collens pointed out, KW's
franchise philosophy includes "Integrity: Do the right thing."

My AA website has been up since February 2003, and has evolved over the years due to innovations I have done myself, many times with help from the AA support team.  I did not want a "cookie cutter site," and mine is quite unique.  I change the home page content from time to time.  I have had nearly 1,700,000 hits, and a great many of my sales have come from this site.  Take a look at www.MarilynJacobs.com

You can also check out my idxdirect website, http://www.FLWaterfrontCondos.com, very different and with much help from their support team too.  I link them back and forth.  Clients can register on that website, and it is up to ME (or you) to keep in touch with those clients as well as to put in the content, again with the help of website support folks.

I try to make both sites "sticky" and work on them continually, when ever there is time.

I found BOTH companies very helpful.  When I wanted to add features, they helped me do that.  Sometimes there was a fee for them creating a way to do that... but the internet is "the place to be found."

Best wishes to all,

I think the approach I would have taken was to ask the agent what she liked about the site and walked her through the process of how to create her own brand that she would like even better.

There is so much ego in the design industry and it is sad that the agents take the brunt of what seemed to be an honest request and had it thrown back in her face.

Throwing her under the bus...  she probably just wanted to have a nice site.

Throwing this agent under the bus. Seems to me she came in with questions about how to make her online presence beautiful, like one of your designs. Why would you take this approach with anyone Suzanne? Simply asking her what she liked about your work and directing her in a fun and engaging way would have probably resulted in a win situation.
