Many of us have the internet on our cell phone. But has anyone used an adapter on your laptop to enable it to receive the internet via your cell phone. It seems that I have heard of this but don't know what I need to do it.

I would be very careful using my cell phone as a modem for internet...
Go online and search for free wifi hotspots or war drive yourself and discover them.
If you need internet access for your laptop, consier a dedicated usb/pmcia wireless device to plug directly into your laptop to access a provders service.
When looking at plans, look for unlimited data transfer..

Not exactly sure of what you want to do, but I use my cell phone to access the internet on my laptop all the time. I use a program called PDANet http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/

You are asking about what is often called an air card or wireless data card.
They are PC Cards which are for notebooks. They have cellular data modems inside and are used to access the Internet (and VPNs and other stuff) using your cell phone carrier's wireless connection and service.
Like WiFi, only it's available anywhere that carrier has service, rather than being limited to a WiFi HotSpot's 100 foot range. I would not want to use an open unsecured hot spot it is just asking for trouble this is a much better way.
Check with your cell phone provider about the cost of the card in your area there are places that sell the cards but you have to arrange for service through your cell phone provider.

Depending on your particular cellphone handset, you may be able to get a cable which connects the phone to you laptop and will save you getting the aircard and signing up for an additional 2 years of service. Check with your phone carrier.
I used to do this with an old Motorola handset before I got a wireless card.

Not necessarily. My Sprint service allows me to hook up my phone to my laptop (with the same hotsync cord used to sync with PC programs) and use it as the "wireless card" instead of buying a separate card and plan. Costs me about $20 a month but works really well for those on-the-road-presentations. (Sprint carrier with 700p Treo which is also another site specific issue.) I had a Pocket PC with Verizon ( actually three) that kept crashing and burning. They wouldn't upgrade me to the Palm so I paid their extortionist cancellation fee (this after being a customer for almost 20 years - yes my husband had the original "brick") went over to Sprint and got the Palm 700 and OS that syncs with my outlook, and other MS programs such as word, excel, web browser, and automatic email updates while I'm on the road. I did not have success with Pocket PCs. Ask your carrier, you shouldn't have to pay for a separate card and plan.Mahalo nui loa,

Well, it depends on what exactly your needs & goals are. Even though, I can
use my Treo 700p as a modem for my laptop, I prefer having a seperate card
to have Broadband access for my laptop. It is great to have all these
options.
