I wanted the same ability and found a Brother all-in-one printer at staples that could not only be plugged into the computer via USB, but instead, it can be connected directly to a router via an ethernet cable. This way I can print to my printer from any of my machines from anywrhere in the house. If I remeber the printer ran just under $200.

You need to establish a workgroup on all computers that will be using the router (right click on 'My Computer' and go to properties, click on 'computer name' then 'change'). Select a name, such as 'OFFICE', for your work group You may have to reboot. Then you will need to 'share' the printer on the desktop. Go to the printer setup screen, right click on the printer to be shared, then click on 'sharing...'

Next, have your printer driver disk handy and go to 'add printer' on the laptop. Follow the prompts to locate the 'shared' printer. You may or may not need the printer disk.

This is very quick and dirty. If I can be of assistance, you may call me during nornal working hours - CDT.

You should be able to hook up to the printer attached on your desktop assuming that the printer is in "Shared" status.

First, go to "Printers" in the Control Panel.  Right click on the printer that you want to print to.  There should be an option called "Share".  Click on this and make sure that the printer can be shared.  (There should be a checkbox allowing the sharing capabilty).

You can then add this printer as you would add any printer.   Go to your laptop and add a printer.  You will see an option as you are going through the setup wizard that asks if the new printer is a "Network" printer.  You will want to select network printer and the system should go searching for the printers on the network and will include any printers that can be shared.

Let me know if this doesn't work and we will try something else.

Thanx!

I have my HP 7300 hooked directly up to my linksys wireless router. I then just add a new printer and look for it on the local area network.
