Message from John Reilly, e-PRO:

Smartphone Guru Dick Betts responded to Larry Perry's thread below:

The much expected event is about to hit "The Pre" is coming June 6th. Few things I have been reading for the last few days, sorry I have been mobile since Tuesday, I want to clear up. As many people that say they hate their carrier as many will say they love them. Guess what there is not a best carrier, depends on where you live etc so let's move past that. You need to get a phone from a carrier for 24 hours to see if it works where you live, work, play and favorite bar. If the phone works then you can change carriers. Early fee for changing carriers, last nite had a long talk with an agent who just signed a 2 year agreement with Verizon and wanted the Pre, her concern was the cancellation fee of $150. Do the math, if the phone works where she needs it to work she will pay Verizon $150 a month for the next 2 years, switching to Sprint her bill drops to $100 for the exact same service, net gain on switching $50 X 24 = $1,200 less $150 = $1,050. SWITCH!!!!

I know I read about why Sprint? Sprint has AT&T and Verizon extremely worried, they have stopped the bleeding and have plans coming out which in my opinion will reclaim the market share. Sprint and Palm teamed up and expect to sell "In the millions" of the Pre, that was the reason for the delay. Palm will never announce how long they offer a phone with just one carrier, remember the Centro. I do know for a fact they have tested the GSM model of the Pre which means AT&T and T-Mobile are in line to release, and as far as Verizon just paint a different name.

I have written about the war between the carriers ever since Dan Hesse was named CEO of Sprint and I do believe he is going to shake up the market. Just so you all know I am an AT&T customer so don't think I am plugging my company, actually I think they all suck when it comes to service, sorry did I say that out loud.

Watch what is about to happen with wireless cards in the next 60 to 90 days.

So with that all said come on Pre and watch certain other smartphones go runnin back to there Momma!

Happy Memorial Day all!

Dick

I have a friend who works for Sprint. Let me reassure you, Verizon and At&T are not worried about Sprint. Sprint has been losing market share, closing call centers and laying off people. Most of their clients are switching to Verizon and At&T. Why do you think Verizon came out with their Friends and Family line share plan? To capture Sprint customers who have had a similar program for years. Yes, Sprint's cost is lower, but, trust me on this one from personal experience and from my friend's experience, Sprint's customer service is a misnomer. It should be called customer dis-service. You'll pay for it with their customer dis-service.
Everybody has the same phones (except for the iPhone) just different versions or names. I have had Verizon for 11 years. Their not perfect and I get the occasional rep who doesn't care whether they resolve my issues. But those instances are few and far between.
Keep your eyes on the horizon because I believe you'll see Sprint going down in flames within the next year.

Tell us Lynn what you really think. :-))

It's clear you believe strongly that Sprint is on its death bead. Although I live about 15 miles from Sprint's world campus and many of my neighbors are long-time Sprint employees, I don't profess to have any insider information regarding the prognosis for Sprint. I can tell you that when you talk with Sprint employees you don't get the feeling they are expecting to be out of work within the next year.

The general feeling seems to be that the hiring of Dan Hesse was a very positive step and will ultimately save the company.

No one is mentioning AT&T. Aren't they coming out with something new this summer to replace the TREO? I have AT&T because it opens the Supra Lockbox. I do not want to change carriers unless I absolutely have to.

.

Its not the service provider that "opens the lockboxes" its the hardware. Palm devices can open the lockboxes as well as now Blackberries have an option. You can get a Palm Treo/ Centro with various service providers, so its the phone itself, not the service provider.

Palm is coming out with the Pre this weekend to replace the TREO and to be in competition with the Apple iPhone. ONLY Sprint is offering the Palm Pre at this time. And ONLY AT&T offers the iphone.

Love the phone and capabilities. Not such a favorite of the LB "Fob" Opener. I switched back to the "D" Key just for ease of manipulation.

OK, so I also am using AT&T and really prefer not to change.

Is there a resale/recycle source for an AT&T Palm Treo 700W?

I checked Craig's list in my area as well as nearby areas,

but all the ones for sale are for Verizon or Sprint.

I love my original Treo but it is getting much worse for the wear.

I think that if I can get a mid grade update to 700W or Wx,

then I could last until AT&T has what I need… a year or more out.

Any other suggestions?

Anyone going to switch who wants to make a deal?
