 Carbonite - Warning!

Warning! I had a partial crash with my hard drive and used Carbonite to recover. I would have lost 18,000 files in the "My Documents" folder alone, if I didn't have a "backup backup"!
FORTUNATELY I had another backup on a stand alone drive with which I used my favorite backup solution - EazyBackup. IT doesn't pick and choose what it will back up. It backs up the entire contents of the folder - PERIOD!
I misunderstood how files were selected for backup with Carbonite. You may have too, so go take a look at which FILES - not folders, have the green circle indicating it has been backed up. Just clicking on your "My Documents" folder and saying back up everything in there, does NOT back up everything in there. You have to individually select program files, EXE files, files over 4MB, and others.
I'm not saying Carbonite isn't good. I'm saying read the fine print about what it's backing up, and physically go to your files and see what IS being backed up. Essentially, you have to open every folder on your computer that you want backup up, and check each and every file for the green circle to make sure.

Gary -

I'd like to correct some misinformation in your post above. Carbonite does not automatically back up files that are larger than 4 GB, not 4 MB as you suggested (there's a big difference). Carbonite is designed to automatically back up the files that are most important to most people; their photos, music, emails, Quicken files, etc. Yes, there are some files that are not included in the default backup set, because these files are usually of little or no value to most of our customers. We also want to make sure that your initial backup completes as soon as possible. Therefore, we exclude files larger than 4 GB. That way, the backup of important files like financial records and photos won't be held up while Carbonite spends two days trying to back up one 5 GB file.

You can, however, manually add any file to your backup by right-clicking on the file and selecting "Back this up" from the Carbonite menu.

And to make everybody's life a little easier, we put color dots on the files that are backed up, so that it would be easy to determine in a glance which files are backed up and which aren't.

Sincerely,

Dave Friend, CEO

Dave - Gary - I'd like to correct some misinformation in your post above. Carbonite does not automatically back up files that are larger than 4 GB, not 4 MB as you suggested (there's a big difference).

Gary - There IS a HUGE difference. That was a typo, and you have my apologies.

Dave - Carbonite is designed to automatically back up the files that are most important to most people;

Gary - There I will take exception with that generalization. Many people, myself included, have downloaded many applications and they have an ".exe" extension. Without specifically including them, they are gone.I have not had time to review exactly what files I would have lost, but there were thousands.

Dave - their photos, music, emails, Quicken files, etc. Yes, there are some files that are not included in the default backup set, because these files are usually of little or no value to most of our customers.

Gary - And I pointed that out. You make it easy to select individual files to back up. I won't argue that. But I believe you should make what is backing up by defualt MUCH more clear. People tend to read as little as possible. For Carbonite to come back and say "We make it very clear that only certain files are backed up" is all well and good. but if a significant number of people end up losing files in a backup because they did not see that, they are still going to be unhappy. Maybe some kind of warning window should pop up just prior to the final step, stating that "The following files have not been included in your backup".

Dave - And to make everybody's life a little easier, we put color dots on the files that are backed up, so that it would be easy to determine in a glance which files are backed up and which aren't.

Gary - That IS a nice visual. Unfotunately the average user has many tens if not hunderds of thousands of files. To go through them all and look for the missing dots is excruciating. Having just done it, I can attest to that.

I'm not trying to beat up Carbonite. I would just like to see it better in those respects. I'm still using it!

I will be the first one to say Carbonite is incredible.

When my hard drive on my laptop crashed I bought my new laptop and Carbonite restored my files even while I used my laptop and while I slept.

I did not have any issues as Carbonite was very upfront with what is and is not backed up by default. They were also very informative on how to backup the files that they do not backup by default and it was very simple to backup everything I wanted backed up.

I would highly recommend Carbonite to everyone.

Sincerely,

Jeff Launiere, P.A.

I use Carbonite and am wondering what files are not backed up. Is there an
easy way to find out? Any way to do a search?

Ahh, the dreaded back up conundrum……First off, I personally use and am a referral partner for Carbonite. For my smaller business clients, I strongly encourage them to use it in addition to the other "data protection," systems we implement.

Here's the skinny folks, if IT (data) is important, you should have a layered approach to protecting your information, period.

We centralize the data onto a server or network storage device, usually a multi drive (RAID) system..We use the Buffalo Tech Terrastation Pro, easy to set up, pretty much plug and play..About the size of a toaster on steroids…

This way, if a drive fails, no problem, as the other drives will take over until the new drive is rebuilt. No loss or access issues. For home users, MS has come out with Windows Home Server, and HP makes a very nice box….

Another option for home users, is to add a second hard drive into your existing machine, very easy to do, takes approx 30 minutes or less. It becomes a "slave," drive to your "master," or "C" drive. I name it data and use it to store my info. This way it is separate from the actual Operating System (OS) and far less likely be corrupted or damaged. If I need to reload windows, no problem, my data is still safe and I can wipe and reload and be on my way…

Second, we configure the security/permissions on the actual files/folders to prevent unauthorized access or accidental deletion, etc…Pretty basic stuff, all part of Windows…

Third, we back up the data files that are 'mission critical," to the business..QB files, .pst's, misc docs, etc. Here, we use either external USB hard drives, or our preferred method is the Dell RD1000 cartridge based solution. This is called a "normal daily backup" We also include the "system state," for the machine the data resides on, to make it easier to restore the machine settings in the event of a failure.

We NEVER back up .exe files, as it is a complete waste of time and space. You should make copies to cd/dvd of any apps, and then store em, or copy them to an external USB hard drive if they are that important.

Fourth, we transfer the data offsite, this is where Carbonite and other "hosted," or "cloud" solutions come into play.

If an issues comes up, go to your local copies first, restore from there, or hit the Carbonite portal and transfer the file back. Remember that transferring large volumes of data over the net will take awhile to do, and should be done only if the previous solutions don't work.

Finally, we do a test restore..More than 50% of conventional tape drives/backups fail….

I will go back to my original point, if "IT" is important, you had better have a layered approach in place..yes, it will cost money, so quit complaining and moaning and DO something about it..It has never been easier and inexpensive to protect your information.

Sincerely,

RC Fullerton

Carbonite Backups
------
To know what Carbonite has backed up start by making sure you're Options are set properly. Open Carbonite, click Set Options and make sure the box is checked that says "Display colored status dots on my files and folders".
  • Carbonite will then automatically put a Solid Green dot on any Folder or File that's completely backed up.
  • A Green dot with a White center on a Folder means that some of the files within are being backed up.
  • The dot will be Orange when the Folder or File is flagged to be backed up on your next scheduled back up.
By default, Carbonite backs up your My Documents folder and most files within. It doesn't back up programs by default. Any Folder or File that is not tagged to be backed up can be set up manually. Simply point to the Folder or File and right click on it. You'll see a "Carbonite" label and you can tell Carbonite to back up that Folder or File henceforth.
Note: As of now, Carbonite will not back up a Network drive (on another PC) or an External drive.

Thank you Randall for a very good and thorough solution to back ups.

I've been using Mozy rather than Carbonite for sometime. I've never needed to restore anything, luckily.

Is there any real difference between the two solutions--Mozy vs. Carbonite?

Thank you.

Chris asks:

"Is there any real difference between the two solutions--Mozy vs. Carbonite?"

I have not used Mozy, so I googled your question and read some articles…

Here is a good one…
