Hi all, looking at finally getting away from Palm. And while I do like the looks of the new Palm Pre coming later this year, it takes so long for Palm to get anything right, I would hesitate to wait for this until its had some real world testing.

So I saw the HTC Touch Pro (Sprint, though may be available on other systems, maybe other names)... and it seems to encompass everything. The cool touch screen aspects of an iphone, the business applications needed like email and full internet and document handling ability.

it has a slide out keyboard, but also has touch screen capability . Seems the best of all worlds for a realtor who needs email, wants better internet capability in the field and likes the idea of full editing and viewing capability of word, excel and powerpoint. You can even plug this device into a projector and do your presentations from powerpoint, right from your phone. Its got bluetooth and wi-fi too.

Anyone here have one? Thoughts?

Aloha Catherine:

I have the HTC Touch without the slide out key board (which I didn't want because it makes it slightly heavier), but I believe the phones are similar.

I'm very happy with my phone and posted about it on RT before. Here's the link:

One of the draws for me was the "transcriber" which I really lot. It's not 100%, but it's very helpful. I've had my phone for about 6 months and the only two issues I have so far are (a.) the touch screen dialing has a slight millisecond delay but I'm somewhat used to it now and (b.) sometimes the VM indicator shows a message when there isn't one - it usually clears when the next message comes in. I think this might be a software issue.

The reception is very good, the music sounds awesome, browsing is pretty quick, and I'm very happy with my $99/month plan that is all inclusive.

With Warmest Aloha,

I purchased the HTC Touch Pro through Verizon 4 weeks ago. If you are a Microsoft centric person this is a great phone. It's more like a mini PC than a phone. But I'm having a lot of problems with it, not sure if it is Verizon or the phone. I am a new Verizon customer (convert from Cingular) and the service is terrible in my home and home office. Everyone I know is on Verizon and loves it but coverage is an issue. Also I have learned a very interesting thing about the carriers configuration of the phones. When I chose this phone I did so by going out to the manufacturers website and looked at the review of the phone and its capabilities. I purchased the phone for the functionality, large screen and mobile 6.6 service. But since I bought the phone I come to realize that Verizon re-tooled the phone and many capabilities the manufacturer offered are not there. One of the most important one for me is Voice Tag. This enables you to speak into the phone and say "Call Mike's Cell" and the phone will dial the number. We use this all the time while driving, and is an iimportant safety feature. It's driving me crazy. Also it's a lot of work to set up. Previously I had a cell phone and a PDA and wanted to eliminate the two devices. I thought I did so but now I'm not sure. Everyone in my office carries a Blackberry and I did not want to go that route. I have to make a new decision today and if your interested I'll let you know what I find out.

I purchased the HTC Touch Pro (US Cellular) last summer. I was looking for something that had the internet capability, email capability and I like the keyboard (although as someone else posted, it does make it heavier).

Another feature I like is the dial-by-voice capability. Again, it is a little cumbersome to set up, but nice for dialing in the car (hands-free). I am still learning all the tricks of using it, but it also can be set up to download emails as they come in and notify you. That feature alone got me a sale 2 weeks after I got the phone because I answered a Buyer inquiry instantly and they were impressed that I was "connected".

My next tech purchase will be a Parrot - hands free for my car. Just not sure which way to go on that yet.

Hope this helps.

Larry,

If I was a Sprint person I would wait for
the Palm Tre which is due out in the
next couple of months. Go to the palm
website and check it out. I think it would
be worth waiting for.

Hi Debbie G.

I think you meant the Palm Pre. Yes ,it seems really hot in all the reviews, but the new OS concerns me a little. Time will tell, eh?

work as my lockbox AND Top Producer?

Gayl, Did you ever find out if the device would work with a lock box. All of the other features appear to be all inclusive but it is cumbersome to carry around a lockbox key and a PDA but if this would work with Sentry box that would be great.

I'd like to mention that the HTC Fuze (AT&T phone) is nearly the same as the HTC Touch Pro (Sprint phone). The last time I checked I'm pretty sure the HTC phones are using Windows Mobile 6.1. If you decide to purchase a phone, you might save some money by checking out your phone choice on Amazon.com. Both HTC phones can be purchased for $149. That's about the most reasonable price anywhere. I've never had a complaint about the service at Amazon.com and I buy from them often, up to and including my last TV purchase.

Anyone thinking about switching to one of the many smart PDA style phones should be careful to note that many of them require a data service agreement on top of the minutes agreement you sign up for (usually $30 a month extra). This comes as a surprise to many because a lot of people aren't buying the phone to surf the internet, etc. They just want a nice PDA phone so they can sync their contacts and calendar.

If you are leaning toward an iPhone, and you are a PC user, you might want to check out my latest RealTown blog post, Mobile Me ... or Me and My iPhone "In the Cloud " It's about syncing with Outlook using a very cool Apple service called MobileMe.

Who provides your phone service in your area is also an important consideration. I had many troubles with Sprint while traveling. It seemed like I was always going somewhere their signal wouldn't reach or was very weak. I finally switched to Verizon on my TREO and haven't looked back. If you are thinking about switching providers, be sure and as others you know how they like their phone service. My iPhone is with AT&T of course, no choice there.

Anyway, good luck on your choice of phone. I had to live with a bad choice once, and hated it. Now I'm a lot more careful.
