Don,

I'm afraid I got caught up in the technical part of your question when I should have been paying attention to the context.

If you put the image of your old PC on the new one, you will indeed bring over all the bad things with the good, like all the crap that gets accumulated over the years (cruft force 10). Not only that, but you will no doubt have hardware conflicts with the old drivers.

I have never trusted any of the migration software but then again, I have not tried any.

I prefer to bite the bullet and install the software I need individually on the new machine. I always keep the old drive somewhere but seldom need it after a few months.

I am about to transfer my files from my old XP to my new Vista computer. At the same time, I have purchased the Microsoft Office 2007 to replace the old Office 2000. Should I install the Office 2007 on the new computer before or after transferring all my old files over? Will all the old Office 2000 files convert to 2007? Or should I transfer all the old stuff over first and then install the new Office 2007? I did buy the Belkin Easy Transfer Cable for Vista. I appreciate any help or any other insights or advice for this process.

I use Office 2007 Ultimate. It reads Word documents from all prior versions of Word easily. It also seems to open all other older Office program files. In my opinion it won't make any difference if Office 2007 is installed or not when you transfer files.

After installing Office 2007, be sure to download this add-on that enables you to save in a PDF format. It's handy, and I don't understand why it wasn't standard with Office 2007.

The following will then be able to save as a PDF

  • Microsoft Office Access 2007
  • Microsoft Office Excel 2007
  • Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007
  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2007
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2007
  • Microsoft Office Visio 2007
  • Microsoft Office Word 2007

Older versions of Office could need this upgrade to view and edit Office 2007 files:

Marilyn, Go ahead Install Office 2007 and don't waste the storage space to put both. Everything saved perviously for earlier versions of Office will show in Office 2007. Also in the future you may want to save your files as ".doc" rather than the Office 2007 ".docx" so if you export a file to another computer with an earlier version of Office, it will be readable.
