I do a fair amount of referral business, both incoming and outgoing.
RE/MAX has an excellent on-line Referral Roster, that members can search for a wide range of qualifications. I usually start there. The CRS Directory is also a good source of agent information, as is the ePro directory on-line. "Find a CRS" is available on the CRS website.
After identifying likely suspects, I usually make a phone call to check accessibility and judge communication skills and attitude. Questions about the local market and how business is doing are a good start. With a Buyer referraI, I usually say that I have someone who is considering moving to the area, and ask if a property like what the referral is looking for is realistic. For example, "She would like to get a 2 bedroom condo for under $XYZ, is that realistic?"
I usually send the referral to the first acceptable agent I speak with. I have had really good results.
Follow up with either the referral or the agent, or both, can be worthwhile.
