Some one correct me if I am wrong, back at the Millennium R.com was run by NAR and had a direct feed from the MLSs and updated a few times a day.  Being such a pain to manage they farmed it out and it became this great money machine with preferred listings etc. Then it was reborn again with 3rd party advertising (get your FICO score click here).  Now Tom Early is telling us that we are going back to the original system.  Tell me what is different from R.com version 1 and Gateway except that maybe and that is a big maybe , we will have more pictures.

I have not had a client in recent history tell me they used R.com versus 5 years ago when everybody used it.  It seems if we have a national IDX, people will have to through more hoops to use it.  Why would somebody going to my website to see the local IDX want to know about some other state.  Maybe a national MLS/Idx on one server will be cheaper and easier for the associations to administrate and if so great but if it is just adding another layer of bureaucracy, then forget it.  Maybe NAR figures they can make more money bringing it back in house under a new name.

Tom, can you enlighten us on more.

Lately, there has been a discussion that borders on urban myth: who really owns Realtor.com? That has been compounded by notions about the Gateway, now called Archive/Library (Real Estate Archive Library -REAL). Many people in this community seem to be misguided on a host of issues that are of importance to Realtors. A lot of this probably stems from a lack of activity in their local and state associations, and their failure to attend important NAR meetings. But, of course, since they believe NAR is unimportant or not serving our interests, why attend those pesky meetings?

Be very clear about one thing: if you don't participate, others will, and their objectives just may not match yours. Their squeaky wheels will get the grease, not yours. To paraphrase a revolutionary of a century ago - "power was lying in the street, we just picked it up." Influence often lies in the NAR street (and in the street of your local or state association as well). Come on, folks. Step up. Were you at the NAR Midyear Legislative meetings like Jim Lee and others? You may not be a NAR Director, but you can still make your voice heard at state and regional caucuses at these meetings, and perhaps you may have a role in influencing the vote of your directors.

End of rant (for now).

Opinions different from mine are important, even though they are always wrong.

Karl....

Very well said.  I'll repeat what I often say here on other subjects, but it applies to this as well ... "When we're not part of the SOLUTION, we ARE part of the problem!"
