Just letting you RT know my experience with Dell.
Purchase 4 computers and a printer in the last 1.5
yrs. Paid cash. Just ordered the last one desk top.
Vista, will send but will not receive e-mail. I now
have 18 hours in with Dells tech support and still not
working. Same settings on all computer for e-mail
account. Conferenced called with Dell, Server and my
self, to verify setting. $ different tech supports
told me to call customer service and get a exchange on
the computer, customer service sent me 4 times back to
teck. Took whole computer back to original and
reinstalled everything with Dell support on the line
still not working. Same settings used on 3 other
computet not problem. Now my server has agreed to
check out the machine (another hour up and back at no
charge) Dell support was on the line. I was paying my
assisstant to talke to dell so figure 18 hours at
15.00 per hour, no ohter work done, quite an expensive
computer.

NEVER WILL I EVER RECOMMEND DELL OR USE THERE PRODUCTS
AGAIN.

Any suggestions how to handle this, would be appreciated?

Dear GloryBee -

Welcome to my world!  I bought a Dell from Costco, complete with a 3 year warranty, and am on my 4th computer.  This one is a gem, kind of, and my warranty expires in about 6 months.  The advantage of buying a computer from Costco is that you get "Premier Service" which means that a senior technician will answer the phone within about 5 minutes.

The first 2 computers were exchanged, but the 3rd one was a doozy.  I could wash my hair and make a sandwich in the time it took to load a webpage.  After many screaming fits with technicians, I found out that a 'replacement' computer meant refurbished.

Anyway,  my honest advice is to ask for a Supervisor, be an annoying and whining bitch while the poor original guy who was unlucky enough to get your call, has to listen to your repetitive plaintive wail, " You can't help me!   I've already done that!!!  I've done it 5 times!!  And the last guy told me to do ______, and it made my computer worse!   PLEASE let me speak to a supervisor!!!"

Lather, rinse, repeat.  Maybe about 5 times.  He/she will help you.  Maybe.  Can you tell I'm not a Dell fan??  Wish I could hook you up with an insider friend of mine, but no.  I have none.

I screamed and cussed and finally they sent me another
computer, same problem. Ntice I did not say a new
one. HP does the samething, the send you a
refurbished replacement. I spoke to supervisors, even
just hired my own repair man to look at it.

I only purchased so I could use it remotely to my
main, 698.00 but with 22 hours of my assistants time,
and 170.00 from my repairman, it is one of the most
expensive computers I have purchase in the last couple
of years.

The last two Dells I've had with next-day on-site service or "Gold" level service has been replaced, and much faster than they promised (three days instead of two weeks, for example).  Yes, they were refurbished.  But they had more memory, more storage, and newer/better operating system (XP in place of ME) and a number of additional bells and whistles lacking on the originals.  Just remember to never buy Dell without the next-day on-site Gold level service.

I have had 11 computers over my time in business and
never purchased a service contact, so naturally I did
not purchase one this time. Never have I sen anything
like this. The refurbished one has not extras and I
went over the list. It acts the same as the first
one. So I am going to try to send this one back also,
it will take forever I am sure.

After hiring my own repair man, purchaseing outlook it
still does not work. Waiting to see if the repair man
can get a patch for Vista from Microsoft.

Makes you wonder why some people always get great service and others get lousy service, is it just luck?

Dell, HP and others have always performed as agreed for me. Of course I haven't had any real problems putting Vista on my network that also has XP.

I had better find some real wood to knock on now ;)

I decided after all the money I spend on the new
computer, and finally getting a replacement that did
not work, I would send it back an purchase windows
XP. I recieved the replacement on 3/29. Dell said
the would not as they went back to the original dat of
2/26 when I got the first one. Well needless to say I
went wild. Forgot to go through Realtor.org., I asked
gor a mananger, 3 more calls no manager, finally I
said, "Ok you won't replace the machine with XP or let
me return the machine and get my money back. I am a
REALTOR and I will post my experience with Dell all
over the internet as I am involved in many messages
boards. Well then I got a manager and he finally
agreed to take the 2nd machine back. I told him all I
want is XP (they person I ordered from told me I could
not get XP) which now I find you can. I have about
1200 in a 685 machine (using it just as a remote).
time my assistant spent on the phone with Dell 22 hours.

We ordered our last Dell system using the Small Business portal into Dell. The service is sooo much better than 'Home Office'. Adding the $79 'gold' plan has led to us getting expert help with a networking issue in less than 5 minutes. That included installing Dell's version of PCAnywhere.

Just a note that I had a 3 year Gold Service Warranty.  Yes, my 3 replacement computers did indeed arrive within a few days.  And, yes, the technicians did answer much faster and were more experienced than the usual bunch.  And, yes, I did get a newer computer twice since the original computer I bought was no longer being built.   They do provide a like-or-better replacement computer.

HOWEVER, the fact that I had to replace a brand new computer 3 times, and the fact that they were never able to fix any of them on the phone - nor would they send a technician to my home, by the way - is just inexcusable.

My fourth Dell has been a fairly good computer.  But I will not use them again.   The hours I spent trying to get this resolved is outrageous.
