Many of you know me as I travel North America teaching Mobile Technology, speaking to about 30,000 agents annually.  I am proud and excited with a deal I have worked out with Sprint.  FREE Palm Centro Smartphones for REALTORS with a 2 year activation.  I am currently working with all carriers and hope to have them realize what a powerful buying block agents are.  In the meantime anybody interested in this offer please send an email to Scheduling@DickBetts.com   I will be posting more information on my website next week.

ok.  Is that a NEW activation?  What about qualified upgrades?  (i.e., you're an existing customer and after 18 months, Sprint allows you to get a new phone at a reduced rate... usually NOT FREE but not full price either).  How much will it cost me?

That's a very good question!  One that I am not going to answer!  The carrier needs to look at your specific situation with your contract details to give you the answer.  I did not set out to get into the phone sales business – my mission was to find a way to make it easier and cheaper for agents to get their hands on a Smartphone.  I am amazed at the stories as I travel around asking where people got their devices and how much they paid.  I will have two agents in the same room, going to the same store walk away with the same device and different price tags!I have been on a scavenger hunt this year to find deals, discounts and bargains for agents to take advantage of.  Hundreds of agents have contacted me looking for advice on what to purchase – they are scared to buy a device because it has become such a large investment and it’s too confusing to figure out which one to get.  The salesmen in the local retail store usually have no clue on what the Smartphone does, nor do they care what an agents needs are.  It has gotten too confusing and agents are walking away frustrated or worse, with the wrong device.I think I have found a great group to work with that understands a REALTOR’s needs and is willing to provide it in a simple format at a great price!  Let’s keep it simple folks!  This business is hard enough!

Now this promotion is highlighting the Palm Centro but they carry other devices and will offer them at a discount to us.   Example, the 755p using Sprint $149, next week Verizon will be rolling out the exact same 755p which I think they will be selling for $399.  The best part of my negotiations isn’t just the phones at a discounted rate – I have worked out special pricing on the unlimited data & email package.  Only 15 bucks a month for agents!  Looking at a 2 year contract with the same phone with unlimited data and email, not adding in a minute package, Sprint $329 - Verizon $939 saving the agent $610.

Just for the record, I carry a Treo 680 using AT&T.  I am not endorsing Sprint, AT&T, Verizon or any other carrier.  You need to pick the carrier and device that serves you best and am not entering a debate about who is best.  We are making progress on getting this offer extended to other carriers as well and will update our website as soon as we are able to get the details ironed out.

For now, this group needs to know you are working thru me to be able to take advantage of these great offers.  Please sent your email with details about current carrier, contract expiration and contact information to Scheduling@DickBetts.com  Within the week we should have our website set up with an easy enrollment link but didn’t see the need to hold off on sharing this great news!

I think the group interested in Smartphones should know that the Treo and
Blackberry are not insurable with the carrier. I had a Treo 680 as well,
dropped it and the face cracked up the middle. The repair for "physical
damage" would be $200, so opted for a Professional Blackberry I purchased
for $300. Blackberry's are also uninsurable, but heavier duty and have more
functionality. You might want to check it out!

I don’t want to get into the debate of Treo versus Blackberry.  Many of you that have heard me speak know my feelings on this subject, but for the rest here it goes.  The mobile device you finally select to carry is a personal decision and should meet your needs as a Real Estate Professional.  The carrier you select should work where you live and work and you might want to look at what family and friends are using due to mobile to mobile being free.

In my opinion that device is a Treo with the Palm Operating System.  I feel the Treo offers so much more for the real estate professional then any other device.  It’s Ease of learning, programs that can be added and how it works with other infrared devices (i.e. lockboxes, printers and other devices) adds so much to the REALTORS’ life then any other device.

In a nutshell Blackberry has the best email function but lacks as an organizer and ability to use add on programs.  I read on Real Talk about agents carrying both a Treo and a Blackberry, get a grip.  The all in one idea is great and wonderful if you can pull it off, you may need to settle for a little less of something to get more in another area.  As a REALTOR if you want to do the following the Blackberry just doesn’t cut it;

 Open GE Supra Lockboxes

Use 3rd party software turning the Treo into a wireless modem giving you free internet anywhere in the country

Chose between 28,000 3rd party software products (i.e. Expenses programs, and about 4,000 real estate specific programs)

Built in Financial Calculator that has all the features of a $80 stand alone device ( you can even save calculations to a certain client!!!!)

Able to print everything in the device by IR and Bluetooth

The Calendar, Contacts, Memo and Task functions of the Treo are far superior to the Blackberry which is a printed fact.  I found the following quotes from Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, July 7th, 2007 article “Well, first of all, both of these products are primarily communication devices — they make phone calls and fetch email, in addition to performing the functions of a Personal Digital Assistant. If you wants a phone-and-email device that is also a very good PDA, the Treo beats the BlackBerry hands down. The latter is first and foremost an email device and now has a decent phone. But its calendar, address book and other PDA functions are weak. The Treo, which evolved from the Palm PDA’s, is much better at these tasks, in my opinion.”

If you have fallen in love with your Blackberry because of email then check out the Treo program Blackberry Connect which you load on The Palm Treo and works off the Blackberry Network.

The biggest thing I hear is my “Blackberry gets my email almost instantly”, well my Treo does also without even hitting a button, doesn’t even need to be turned on!

So again selecting a device is a very personal choice and I firmly believe the Treo can be made into the perfect device to take your office mobile.

All true Dick but you failed to mention many of the Blackberry's are compatible with TP 7i for devices. Thus it becomes a somewhat real estate specific device. Also not all of us out here use Subra. Our association uses a card with a chip that opens the boxes. Best shift we have ever made short of perhaps Centralized Showing Service.

Hi Dick,

I have had the Treo 650 for 3 plus years now and can upgrade my phone. I am afraid upgrade to a new one for fear I will not be able to use it to open the lock box. Will the new model work the same way as the Treo 650? My carrier is Verizon and you are right, no one in the store can answer any questions about the newer smart phones. Can you help me? I am interested in upgrading this phone.

By the way, I met you when Pgh first introduced the Smart phone for Realtors.

Hi Sandy,

If you upgrade to a new treo all you need to do is go to the Kim Supra website and download the software for your new phone and install it and you will continue to be able to open lock boxes. I upgraded to the Palm 700p last year from my 650 and did just that. No problems at all.

I have had a Treo for 2 years.  Both Palm and Windows versions, and I can't stand either.  The lockbox key is always a problem.  Today I stood outside a home for 15 minutes waiting for the software to work (and yes I made sure I updated the software before going on the appointment).

Besides the never ending problems with the Supra Key, I have had my service provider exchange several phones due to it crashing at least once a day.  I have to re boot my phone all the time.  Also, both the Palm and the Windows version have had problems with incoming calls.  If you get a lot of calls both phones will eventually quit showing you the incoming number and sometimes even shut off / reboot on it's own when receiving a second call.

Associates in my office have had the same problems.  A couple of agents have switched to the BB Curve and find the phone flawless.  The only difference is the BB doesn't have IR, so no lockbox ability.  For me that's not a disadvantage but a blessing

Hope this helps.
