I create an Outlook contact for each entity which contact contains the username/password and then store the Outlook data file in an encrypted directory with a strong password. The Outlook archive files are stored similarly. Acronis backup files are encrypted using a strong password. Hopefully, I have no security holes.

I created a folder in Outlook called PssWrds.... (vowels left out so no bots could find it)... always easy to find... everything I register for goes in there...

I could not agree more, especially trying to remember a login / password
for the numerous websites, applications, etc. I have an even harder
time being that I support the IT side so I have to remember passwords
that run an entire organization. Hopefully some of these methods that I
use (or have used in the past) will help give you some direction on what
might work best for you.

1.) Try just a simple Excel (or my favorite Open Source alternative
Calc) spreadsheet, put it together however you will best remember what
site, what login, what server, etc. that you need to remember. Then,
when you are all done (of course it's a living document, so there will
be changes later) you can lock it with the only password you need to
remember at this point. Keep the document in a safe place, and make
backups of it, but make sure it stays password protected (or encrypted).

2.) This next method is one that friends of mine are big on right now,
is to use an application that does what I mentioned for #1. Same
principle, you just remember one password and login to go and see the
rest of what you have in this program. The best part about this one is
you can utilize the encryption that they have built into the program.
This is usually a lot stronger than a simple password that locks a
spreadsheet document like Excel. Again I cannot stress enough, the same
strategies apply where you need to keep a backup and put them in a safe
place. Some of these programs are: http://keepass.info/, and
http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/ The ones I have listed are all
free as I am a big supporter of Open Source applications, but you will
find many that are commercially available for payment as well. ** A
note here, I keep my password database on a special USB key that I take
with me called an IronKey which is VERY secure.

3.) There are web sites that will do the same as #1 and #2, but I'm not
as comfortable in this respect. But wanted to put this out there that
it is an option.

4.) Another option is Open ID (please check out wikipedia for full
details). While this is not big now, it is gaining steam and I
guarantee it will be as the push is made over the next few years as
companies really come to realize the importance of the single-sign-on
process. The method, I will likely choose to use Verisign's , is to use
an RSA id key (this is a device that basically gives you a random
generation of characters for your password), and log in with that along
with your password. Then on every site that participates, you use that
same login and password key to log in.

I hope this has been of some help.

I keep a list on my computer, not worried about anyone
getting them as I and my assistant must put a passwork
in to log on.

The first thing I do is open the password file, so if
I need one it is right there and I do them by groups,
phone, web sights, software, etc.

Would not do it without having a password required to
log on
