It started off the way it should have. A still shot of the now defunct City Center, a clip of Mayor Coleman's news conference,
a direct sound bite from the man himself. That's when it all went wrong.
NBC4's report on Columbus' decision to purchase City Center, a giant pimple needing popped right in the middle of downtown,
could have been an objective look at the state of downtown development. Mix some good - the sale of City Center for a
mixed-use redevelopment by Nationwide Realty Investors, the same folks who brought you Burnham Square & the North Bank
Condos - with the bad - a few developers struggling to get rid of their unsold units - and cap it off with a positive look the
future and panning shot of downtown.
Instead NBC4's Ana Jackson brought viewers a negative report on the apparent sad state of downtown housing. It seemed to fall
in line with the endless string of negative reporting on the state of real estate all across the country, which you hopefully
realize is the current whipping boy of mainstream media. The line that got me in this piece was "Since 2002, the Downtown
Development Corporation estimates developers have built 3600 condos, only 1000 have sold..." So if their math skills hold up,
they're reporting that 2600 units remain built and sitting on the market in downtown Columbus? Way to get the facts straight
and give your own city the shot in the arm it needs to keep the gentrification of downtown in full swing.
The story seemed to have credible sources, harvesting sound bites from the Downtown Development Corporation's Colleen Gilger
and the Downtown Resident Association's Marc Conte. But with Jackson describing downtown with barbs like "dead at night" and
claiming that the "urban appeal hasn't gripped Columbus," the local experts never really had the chance to paint a more
accurate picture.
As this short-sighted investigative look into downtown housing was wrapping up, they spliced in some shots of the Hartman
Building's Phase Two model unit. Of course, they failed to mention that the Hartman Building, among several other buildings
they quickly showed, has been one of the best selling buildings in the downtown market. Phase one is completely sold, and
Phase two already has 5 units spoken for. Ironically, what you didn't see was my client and I waiting in the lobby for the
sales rep to wrap things up and show us some units. After a quick tour of the available lofts still under renovation and an
outline of available finishes, my client plunked down a reservation on a beautiful, yet affordable space w/ covered
parking.
So according to the estimate we got earlier in the broadcast, that leaves 2599 unsold units sitting on the market...
