Money Exchange Now Open At McCarran Airport

Jul. 7, 2008

This little unit is a currency exchange.  For a long time there has been no where in McCarran airport for in bound passengers to exchange their money.  After 911 the business center we had that would do office like things, exchange money, and hold bags went out of business.  The main reason was they were no longer allowed to hold any baggage.
The situation has been very frustrating for our passenger's from Canada, Japan, Mexico and Europe.  Now we have this cute little unit that fills the need of the money exchange.
It is located by claim number 7 and has operating hours of 8:00 A.M.-10:00 P.M. 7 days a week.

Feng Shui For Travel

Dec. 6, 2007
Categorized in: Travel Tips

I was cruising around and found these Feng Shui tips for traveling this holiday. As a part ime employee for Continental Airlines in their baggage service office, I hope everyone does this. It would make my job much easier and everyone would have their bags with them.

On another note while we are speaking about bags, when you check in at the counter you are given baggage receipts thats numbers match the numbers of the tag on your bag. Also your name is also on the main tag on your bag. Please double check your numbers and name as so many of those bags look alike. It will make it more pleasant for you and I. I won't take a claim from an angry passenger and then have to track you down like Dog the Bounty Hunter. Then you won't have to make a trip back to the airport. All will be Happy!!!! Happy Holidays and Happy Traveling.

Daily Feng Shui Tip

Feng Shuiby Ellen Whitehurst. To try best to ensure that your luggage arrives at the same destination at the same time that you do, tie nine or 18 inches of red ribbon, string, cord or thread around the handle of each individual bag. To further quell any fears that your new New Year's Eve attire is celebrating on a carousel somewhere way South of where you've literally landed, put a braid of the herb, sweetgrass, anywhere on the inside of each piece that is traveling with you. Once you return home safely and soundly you can leave the red ribbons on the bags but you should burn the sweetgrass in an attitude of appreciation and gratitude that your travels were so full of ease and grace.

Know Thy Neighbors

Rotten Neighbors?

There is a new website that the ACLU just hates. It is called www.rottenneighbor.com If you are looking for a house in a certain neighborhood, maybe you should check this site before the final signing on the dotted line. It uses google map and you can zoom right in and see exactly what neighborhoods they are talking about. Some of the comments I read talked about home owners associations, a condo that an owner feels is going downhill, a man who hates animals in another neighborhood. Check your neighborhood or a neighborhood you are thinking about buying into. I saw nothing that the ACLA could be upset about, but then I only read about my neighborhood. What does your say?

Strange Laws In Nevada

Oct. 3, 2007
Categorized in: Nevada Facts
Tagged with: laws, nevada, weird

I thought it was interesting some of the laws still on the books in Nevada. I found the information at
www.2spare.com.

· A man is forbidden from buying drinks for more than three people other than himself at any one period during the day.

· Clark County: An ordinance makes bringing a concealable fire arm into the county illegal unless it is registered with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. In order to register a handgun, however, it must be brought in to the police station. Furthermore, you may not register a gun on the weekends, but the police may prosecute you at that time.

· Elko: Everyone walking the streets is required to wear a mask.

· In Eureka, Nevada men who have mustaches are forbidden from kissing women.

· In Las Vegas, Nevada: It's against the law to pawn your dentures.

· In Las Vegas you can bet on any team--except The University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

· In Nevada sex without a condom is considered illegal.

· In Nevada until the 1960s it was illegal to sell liquor at religious camp meetings, within a half-mile of the state prison, in the State Capitol Building or to imbeciles.

· In Reno, Nevada staging a marathon dance is illegal, although posting a notice on a fire hydrant about illegal dance marathons is not.

· In the old days in Nevada a man caught beating his wife was tied to a stake for eight hours a day with a sign that read, "Wife Beater" fastened to his chest.

· It's illegal in Nevada to have a "house of ill fame" within 400 yards of a church or school.

· It is illegal to drive a camel on the highway.

· It is illegal in Reno, Nevada to conceal a spray-painted shopping cart in your basement.

· It's still "legal" to hang someone for shooting your dog on your property.

· Saloonkeepers had to post the names of habitual drunkards if so requested by the local sheriff or members of the imbibers' immediate families.

Looks like Hoffa is not between the goal posts

Jimmy Hoffa and Las Vegas Connections

For more than 30 years the disappearance of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa has remained a mystery.  Oh there have been rumors and Elvis like sitings but nothing has ever come to fruition.  Even last spring they dug up a Michiagn farm looking or his body.  For as long as I can remember the rumors abound that he was buried between the goal posts at Giants Stadium.

A new book out called "I Heard You Paint Houses" by Charles Brandt.  Brandt was Frank "the Irishman" Sheerhan's long time friend and lawyer.  Sheerhan said you don't just say your going out to whack some guy, you say you are going to paint a house. (blood on the walls maybe?)  Sheerhan killed people for mob boss and kingpin Russell Bufalino 25-30 hits in all.

Dying of cancer, Sheerhan told his story to Brandt. The story of Jimmy Hoffa and the day he died, how it happen, why it happened and what happened to Jimmy's body.

You might say that the murder of Jimmy Hoffa began and ended in Las Vegas.  Hoffa was killed because of mob activities on the Las Vegas Strip, and it is likely the only person still alive with personal knowledge of Jimmy's death is someone who lives in a quiet neighborhood in Las Vegas.

It is said that Hoffa was not controlled by the mafia, but he was beholden to them.  They were instrumental in helping him land the Teamster presidency.  When Jimmy went to prison, his successor Frank Fitzsimmions was under Mafia control and did what he was told.  Making sure that the loans from the pensions were available for the Las Vegas casinos.  Hoffa was a threat to that and in July of 1975 he vanished forever.

Stan Hunterton of the Detroit Strike Force ran up against a brick wall, they knew he had gone to a certain restaurant and picked up in a certain car supposedly to attend a meeting with Mafia figures Tony Giacalone and Tony Provenzano and that is where their trail went cold.  Hunterton and his team were sure that it was a mob hit and during the investigation they sent to jail over 30 mob figures for crimes unrealated to Hoffa.  Even Frank Sheerhan who went to prison for 32 years for racketeering.  He always was the prime suspect but never broke under their investigation.  The team had the car and forensic evidence from the house, but could never break anyone to tell them what happened.  Hunterton does say that the confession fits pretty much what they felt happened.

So what did happen to Jimmy's body?

Farewell to THE STARDUST

Final Farewells to Las Vegas' Legendary Stardust

Nov 2, 2006 10:02 PM PST

The legendary Stardust officially closed its doors Wednesday at noon bringing an end to 48 years of colorful Las Vegas history.

Thousands of people flocked to the property to take a last look around and snatch up whatever memorabilia was being sold or given away.

And it's the Stardust name and logo that visitors to this famous property wanted to get their hands on Wednesday morning -- a chance to own a little piece of this chapter in Las Vegas history.

With a bang, not a whimper, the Stardust celebrated its final hours. And with live music and scantily clad showgirls, there was plenty of old Vegas style to the historic hotel-casino's sendoff.

For many of the Stardust employees, it was an emotional farewell.

Von Berosini, Stardust bartender, said, "This last year has been really hard. We all knew this day would be coming so now, we're just saying our goodbyes."

But bell captain Tom McEwan, whose tenure with the Stardust lasted its entire 48 years, says he's ready to say goodbye.

"It's sad, but I'm ready to retire. See, I've got my fishing hat," Tom said.

Fishing was also on the minds of thousands of last-minute visitors to the property, like Randy Deberarvinis, who lined up to collect several Stardust souvenirs being given away all morning long.

"I got playing cards and match books," Randy said.

And for those willing to pay face value, Stardust casino chips with the dates 1958 to 2006 were also for sale.

Even plastic water bottles and souvenir bags were flying out the doors with long-time Stardust regulars, like Michael Lawson, who remembers sneaking in to the Stardust as a teenager many years ago.

"For anyone who never came to Vegas, you missed a great one here," Michael commented.

But when the clock struck noon, Boyd Gaming chairman Bill Boyd had his own symbolic signoff in the Stardust sportsbook.

Bill Boyd said, "The day is finally here. Turn out the lights, let's shut it down, Jake."

And the sports boards faded to black over silence.

If you're after an bigger piece of Stardust memorabilia -- like the gaming tables, slot machines and furniture -- you'll have to wait until Nov. 17 when the Stardust plans to hold a public auction.

The Stardust helped transform the Las Vegas Strip over the years.

For example, it established the showgirl as part of the Las Vegas experience, and one of its first shows featured topless dancers. The Stardust also launched the careers of Siegfried and Roy and many other performers.

The resort opened July 2 1958, with more than a thousand rooms and catered to middle America with its low-priced rooms.

The resort became as famous for its familiar friendliness as its mobbed-up past.

In the 1995 movie "Casino," Robert DeNiro played the finely tailored Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, who ran the hotel-casino in the mid-1970s.

The closing of the Stardust will help make room for the multi-million dollar Echelon Place. But before work can begin on that, the Stardust will be imploded.

Boyd Gaming officials say that could take place in March.

The property must first be cleared out and prepared for demolition and that will take some time.

July is flood awarness month

Floods in Nevada are common when we get rain

The ground gets so dry here because we do not get a whole lot of rain.  When we do the ground can not soak it up fast enough.  So we have water running off the dirt into the roadways.  Every year when we have big rain storms people try to drive on through the water.  Then the firetrucks have to come and pull them out.  Last year the firetruck got stuck in the middle trying to rescue a lady.

I have added here some good links to find out more on flood safety and preparedness,

http://www.floodsmart.gov

For current weather alerts go to the National Weather Service:

Lets all have safe driving if a heavy storm hits, avoid all areas that may flood and yes even the Famous Las Vegas strip gets flood waters

Update on Keil Ranch

Just a quick update for Keil ranch....seems not only is North Las Vegas selling off the land that was suppose to be in trust, but now they are dumping things out there.  So much for historical value.
