How to Remove Late Payments from Your Credit Report

Most people know that if they pay their bills late, their credit scores will suffer. However, most people don’t know this: According to Credit.com, a single 90-day late payment is as damaging as a bankruptcy filing, a tax lien, a collection, a judgment, or a repossession. It doesn't matter if you're late paying a $50 credit card bill or a $2,000 mortgage payment.  All that matters is that you were 90 days behind in paying your due balance.

Payment punctuality counts for about 35% of your overall credit score. Paying bills on time is generally the single most important contributor to a good credit score. Being late on any bill, for any length of time, is a possible sign of future non-payment of debt and is always viewed negatively by lenders. Late payments stay on your credit report for 7 years from the date of the initial missed payment.

A 30 or 60 day late payment will damage your credit score only while it is being reported as currently past due. They usually don’t cause lasting damage to your credit score after this period passes unless you make 30 or 60 day late payments on a regular basis.

If you only have a few 30-60 day late payments listed on your credit report, the best thing to do is contact your creditors by phone and ask them to remove it. Tell them a nice little story and ask them nicely to remove it. Follow the conversation with a written request to have the isolated late payments removed from your reports.  However, if you consistently make late payments, it will probably take a little more effort.

As mentioned, a 90-120 day late payment is extremely damaging. At around 90-120 days, the creditor will usually write off the account and it will stay on your credit report as a charge off for 7 years.

If you are unable to get the creditor to remove the late payment history from your reports, there are a few other ways to do it. One of the best ways is to dispute them with the credit bureaus.

1. Question about removing late payments

Written by: Maria

HI Chane,

This site has been very helpful to me today. Thanks for everything you do to put it together.

I have a question.. By mistake, I missed my december equity LOC when I paid my bills. They called but I didn't get the message during the holiday chaos. I did finally talk to them, but only after it was 30 days. This is the only delinquency I have on my record. Our scores range from 749 to 823.

I really hate having any bad marks on my credit. Plus now that the interest rates are going down, it would be a good time to refinance.

It would be wonderful to get it removed. Do you think it is possible? Should I contact the lendors credit department directly? If so, what is the name of the department that handles credit reporting? Anything else I might do?

I would be grateful for any insights or guidance. Also, if I get it removed I will send you one of the best motivational books ever.

best regards,
Maria Sayare

Chane,
I have a quick question for you. I've been working on taking some lates off of my credit and it's a very difficult and sometimes a frustrating process. The number one response I am getting to my request is that it's illegal for them to remove a late from my credit because then they will be reporting false information. I know I can get around that because I have, but I just was wondering what the laws REALLY are and what I can counter that claim with. It's really frustrating not knowing.
Thanks so much!

The reporting of late payments (those prior to collection action) are a very 'gray' area... the FCRA Section 605 and any subsection does not include reporting of late payments, only collections. But, it does outline what can be included... and none of those items are 30 - 60 day late payments.

So, fight them all.

Maria,

I'm sorry I didn't answer your question sooner.  I'm just now seeing your comment.

Hopefully by now, you've gotten it removed. If not, call the bank immediately and let them know of the mistake. They should remove it.

If they don't budge, dispute it with the credit bureaus.

Good luck!

Brittany,

It's absolutely not illegal for them to remove a late payment from your credit report, it happens thousands of times a day.  Have you tried to dispute them with the credit bureaus?

I have a 30 day late mark from march on my credit report. I lended my dad my Macy's card so he could buy my mother a gift, and I forgot about the charge until too late.

This is preventing me from getting a student credit card, something that I'd like to have to build credit for when I graduate in 2 years.

The card is a Macy's Visa, so, who should I contact about trying to repair this?

Contact Macy's and ask them to remove it.  They probably won't, but it's worth a try.  Then, you should dispute it with the credit bureaus reporting it.

I just pulled my Equifax credit report from myfico.com.  In the report it shows 4 consecutive inquiries, resulting in a 120 late on the report.  I had closed out a Bank of America credit card back in december of 2006 and when I paid it, I called for the payoff balance including all accrued interest and then paid it off by check. Two months later in February of 07, I get a bill from B of A for interest charges. I called and their representative answering the phone said they would be reversed and any credit inquiries will be reversed. This continued for 4 months until I spoke with the higher authorities at B of A, and they finally reversed the charges permanently.

Tonight I called B of A and they told me to call back M-F from 8am to 10pm and talk to the credit department and they will see if my story is true and decide what road to continue down.

I am now in the market for a mortgage and I have a fico of 652.  Ive had several 30 and 60 day inquiries on my credit reports in the past, but have been clean for nearly 2 years.

My question is 2 fold, what do I do to fix this, and if I do fix it, what will happen to my fico.

Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You in advance!

Talk to their credit department.  They should remove it for you.  If not, dispute it with the credit bureaus.

Your scores will most likely increase if this gets removed - maybe up to 50 points.  It's hard to say without seeing your whole file.

Hi Chane,

I have a question in regards to your great article.

I have had a bank of america credit card for over 5 yrs. 3 yrs ago I moved and called in to have my address changed. They copied the new add. wrong and I never got a bill for one month. I didn't notice until it was past the due date so I called in and spoke to customer service. They apologized for the error and removed the late fee on my account. However, the 30 day late payment still shows up on my credit report. I have called multiple times and have disputed with the credit bureau's but never get anywhere.

A similar situation happened a little over a year ago where an unauthorized charge showed up and I called in and said I didn't approve of it. BoA called the company that made the charge and they said I ok'ed it. Then BoA refused to credit my account--I refused to pay and eventually had the charges reversed via the Better Business Bureau but low and behold BoA shows a 30 day late payment on my credit report for this issue as well.

What gives? Besides these 2 instances my credit is spotless but they refuse to budge. Due to this stance I have not used the card in over 9 months. I have a credit history of over 8 years and these are the only negative items on it--and they shouldn't be there. Any idea's on how to get them removed?

  Hi,

I have a 30 days late on my credit report for a car loan . I have been paying over the phone I made a payment on the weekend which was on Sunday and it took 2 days to clear. First i called them (toyota) and asked them if the payment was posted the day it was made and they said yes, they also told me if it fell on the weekend it wouldnt count to Monday. I called them when I saw this on my credit report and someone else told me that was it took 2 days to post and who ever told  me that was incorrect.  Help, should I write Toyota or dispute directly on my credit file.

                                                                  Thanks

i ran into some unexpected financial difficulties and fell behind on a federal student loan. i was not able to pay in full some months and therefore made partial payments. They weren't reporting me until recently and now i have a 120 day late on my credit report. i asked them if the account is current can it be removed. i was told that in order to keep from being continually reported to bring the account current, but that they could not remove.

what should i do now?

I just came across your site and I want to thank you for the valuable information.
Heres my situation:
When I last checked my credit in April my fico score was 716 which I think is decent but I have one late payment of 30 days late back from Aug 05 on a discover credit card. Do you think its possible to have that removed being that it's from so long ago?
Thanks

OK I was dumb.  I had opted for electronic billing from Chase.  My spam filter blocked the statements and I wound up overdue on a couple Chase credit cards.  I had never ever been late on anything before and my credit scores were around 730.  Now they're 590.  Everything is paid  up now.  Can the damage done by my oversight be repaired?

I recently found that I have a 30 day late payment on my credit report. I had purchased a gift for my parents on the Macy's card (which initially had 0 balance) and I accidently missed the payment. When I noticed the balance on my online account, I immediately payed the entire balance off , however the payment was 60 days late from the due date. It was also reported to the credit bureau as a 30 day late payment. This is the only delinquency on my record.

I am trying to get a house mortgage and due to this late fee record, my credit rating has dropped to such that my loan will not be approved.

I have tried to speak to the Supervisor at Macy's credit services, and she said that it is illegal for them to withdraw the report from the credit bureau. I would like to know if there is such a law, and  what can I say to the Supervisor to get the delinquency record removed from my report. Are there any other options to resolve this issue?

Please adive.
