Here's what I'm looking for.........

somewhere I can WALK or bike to do my shopping, buy produce, go to the library, bakery, dry cleaners, boutiques, esthetician, etc.
Somewhere funky, kinda artsy, a little ecletic, diverse, with some coffee shops, flower stores, the kind of place where I may hear more than just English being spoken.
not too uppity, but still safe.

Here's what I'm not looking for:
subrurbs...gotta get in my car to get anywhere, all the houses look the same, all my neighbours are culturally homogenous, and Starbucks is my only option.

Could you describe:
Old Town, Pacific Beach, Oceanside, Carlsbad, San Carlos, Mission Hills, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista,
Fallbrook, North Park, South Park

Let me start with somewhere that is not on the list: Ocean Beach. While there is a Starbucks you'll be pleased to know that it was vigorously protested by Ocean Beach residents. Ocean Beach has a great coop called Peoples where you buy groceries. There's a great vegetarian cafe upstairs where the food is made fresh daily. There's a bakery on Voltaire that is very good. In my opinion the day life is better than the nightlife but with Downtown close by that's not much of a problem. There are some nice restaurants  in Ocean Beach.

Negatives: It can be a little dirty. Being asked for change is not unsual.

Pacific Beach: It's one big frat party. There are some decent bars but the majority are filled with drunk college aged kids.

Oceanside: A lot of military.

San Carlos: A older, family oriented population.  Not really a walking community.

Carlsbad: Richer and cleaner than your southern options, but also older and possible less fun.

Chula Vista: Newer developments involve the typical malls and starbucks culture. Nice but not unique.

North Park: Some nice places to eat, a little more on the expensive side. Close to downtown for other options.

South Park:

Fallbrook: Some expensive homes, not a walking comunity.
