REALTORS Help Bring Veterans Home for the Holidays

The National Assn. of REALTORS joined U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, and Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-VT, at the annual lighting of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. This year’s lighting ceremony paid special tribute to U.S. veterans, who were also honored at local stops at veteran facilities along the tree’s journey from its home state of Vermont to Washington, D.C.

“The holiday season is a time to reflect and give thanks, and we are grateful for all that our country’s service men and women have done for us,” said NAR Chief Executive Officer Dale Stinton. “Many REALTORS are veterans and active service members who know firsthand the struggles and sacrifices faced by those who serve their nation. As the leading advocate for housing issues, NAR is working to ensure housing opportunities for America’s veterans and are pleased and honored to be a sponsor of this year’s Capitol Christmas Tree event.”

REALTOR Phil Landis from San Diego is a Vietnam veteran.Veteran and REALTOR Phil Landis (shown at right)  from San Diego had the distinct honor of participating in the actual lighting of the tree. Landis was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in the Vietnam War. He was recognized as a 2007 NAR Good Neighbor Awards winner for his works with Veterans Village in San Diego that helps veterans overcome addiction and homelessness.

NAR is committed to addressing homelessness among veterans as well as other housing challenges that veterans face, and the association made a contribution at each stop along the tree’s journey to support veteran housing initiatives and transition funds. On Veterans Day, NAR sponsored a tournament for the U.S VETS – D.C., a unique residential community offering permanent housing and other supportive services for homeless veterans. The tournament raised over $30,000 for District veterans. NAR also made a contribution to U.S. VETS in Las Vegas during the REALTORS® Conference & EXPO there last month.

On Capitol Hill, NAR supports changes to the GI bill which will help make homeownership more attainable for our nation’s vets, and is committed to helping veterans realize the dream of homeownership by ensuring they are able to take full advantage of the VA Home Loan program.
