Coins for Kids

It is that time of year again!  I can't believe that 2009 is almost over.  It seems like only yesterday we were shopping and decorating for Christmas and here it is the Christmas season once again.  I almost think it would be worth leaving my Christmas tree and all of the decorations up all year instead of taking them down and then putting them right back up!  I ran into some people I know at the Jubilee of Trees last week and they told me that they had won one of the trees from the Jubilee a few years ago and that is exactly what they did.  The tree was so beautiful and was so heavy that they left it up all year.  If only my husband and all of my friends would be understanding that I haven't lost my mind, I would leave the tree up!  But that is just not going to happen!

Anyway, it IS that time of year again, and I just wanted to let the Washington County community know that Coins for Kids is busy getting ready to shop, wrap, and deliver Christmas presents to thousands of less fortunate children in our great community.   This is such a huge endeavor and it takes hundred of volunteers to make it successful.  WE NEED your help!!  Please visit our website and see what activities we have planned and try to fit one or two into your holiday schedule.  You will not only be helping make Christmas brighter for lots of children, but it will put you in the Christmas mood too.

If you can't volunteer your time. then maybe you can make a donation.  We accept cash, checks, credit cards, or you can adopt a deserving family and provide them with a wonderful Christmas this year.  There are so many young families who have been affected by the downturn in our economy and are having a tough time providing shelter and food for their children, let alone provide Christmas presents for their family.  See you in December!!

Where did the year go? It seems like just yesterday we were putting decorations on our Christmas trees and were busy making, or shopping for that special gift for our loved ones. Yes, Christmas is right around the corner again and the Coins for Kids Board is busy getting all of the arrangements made for this year’s fundraising.
Most of you know about Coins for Kids and its history, but just to bring you up to date. Coins for Kids is a local charity that provides Christmas presents to less fortunate children in our community. The program began in 1990 by a small group of Kony radio employees who saw a need to assist to a small group of needy children in the community. That first year the Coins for Kids volunteers raised $2500 and shopped for 10 families. Last year Coins for Kids raised more than $110,000 and provided Christmas presents for more than 800 families.
One of the questions that we receive every year is “Where do you get the names for the children that you help?”  Last year we changed our application process from an open enrollment system to a system where the individuals are identified by their clergy, school counselor, teacher, or other approved organization. This system was a marked improvement and we were able to work directly with those who know of families who are in need of assistance at Christmas and it also helped us avoid duplication with other organizations.
We are looking forward to another successful year of fundraising and providing Christmas for less fortunate children in our community. We know that this year may be a little more difficult for attaining our goal of $110,000 due to the economy, but we will do the very best that we can with the money that we raise.
