Jan. 13, 2009 - possibility of adding "No Trucks" signs to the Neighborhood

As many of you already know, last Saturday 6-year-old Jani'yah Irving was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer while riding her bicycle on NW 12th Terrace and NW 32nd Avenue.

I have contacted city officials regarding the possibility of adding "No Trucks" signs to the Neighborhood Identification signs that we are considering purchasing out of our $15,000 Neighborhood Planning Program Grant.  I will pass on further information as it becomes available.

Our sympathies to the family and friends,

Robert

Wow, your suggestion would be much appreciated, tho I'm not sure how it can be enforced.  Our block (the east side of NW 30th Ave and 6th St) has a neighbor who has run his (local and over-the-road) moving business from his home for many years and usually has one or more of his large trucks parked in his driveway plus in one or more locations in the SFN when they are not in use.   His employees come by foot, car, or bike to hook up w/him and drive the trucks off on a regular basis.  Meanwhile, there is a two-yr old and seven year old living right next to him plus a house w/several small children at the top of the block near 6th St .  The youngest daughter was in the past several months learning how to ride her bike w/o her training wheels up and down our block w/the assist of her family members.  It was of real concern to me and I cautioned the family to be very careful due to our somewhat narrow dead-end avenue and the existing private and regular commercial traffic.

Jan. 13, 2009 - Exceptions are the tragedy - - - //RE: possibility of adding "No Trucks" signs to the Neighborhood

We were told the truck in this tragedy was doing a delivery to a business in neighborhood, which apparently would have granted an exception even if there had been a No Truck sign, just as it was apparently excepted by the existing  "No Through Traffic" signs.

The truth is that we need signs all over this city to notify drivers that bicycles, slow strollers, joggers with & without strollers,  cross-country teams, scooter choosers, mail-fetchers, & dog walkers have a right to use any street in the city.  And then we need 7 times the current fines for drivers at fault who hit those precious humans, and CAMERAS and signs and laws and judges that make us more famous for protecting our preople than Waldo is for its notorious speed traps.

Our History

In 1983 Neighborhood Housing Services, in cooperation with the City of Gainesville, began a revitalization effort in the community that is now known as the Stephen Foster Neighborhood. This revitalization effort had many facets, first and foremost was to create a sense of community. Neighborhood signs were posted, community events planned, and neighborhood cleanups scheduled. Recently there have been creek clean ups and Neighborhood Night Out walks to unify us with our neighbors.

Since property owners have a more vested interest in the neighborhood, programs were developed and funded to assist families with the purchase of first homes in the neighborhood. Over the years since the first family moved into the neighborhood, this program changed the face of this community. An area that was made up primarily of rental homes is now a diverse community of homeowners and long term leasers.

Currently we have received a $15,000 grant as part of the City of Gainesville Neighborhood Planning Program. They only select one or two neighborhoods per year for this grant money and neighborhood participation is the cornerstone of this project. If you would like to be included in working on this project please contact us.
