Sep. 15, 2008 - September 18, 2008 City Commission Consent Agenda

Please be advised that the following item is included as part of the September 18, 2008 City Commission Consent Agenda.  Please note the Petition .pdf  at the bottom of the item--Many thanks go to those of you who did all the legwork to collect these signatures--without them, we might be dead in the water.  There is no need for neighborhood attendance at the commission meeting regarding this consent agenda item.   My impression is that the issue will  be on the PSC agenda again following (hopefully)  completion of the noise study.  If there are any developments, I will pass them along as they become available.

In the meantime, one additional comment:  I personally discourage anyone from attending CAP meetings at Koppers--In my opinion, they are nothing more than a free meal attached to a substantively vacuous PR campaign.

PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE, CONSENT

080134.
Noise Ordinance Compliance and Enforcement (B)

Explanation:

The City Commission referred the broad issue of noise ordinance compliance
and enforcement to the Public Safety Committee at its June 23, 2008 meeting.

The Public Safety Committee discussed this referral at its August 25 meeting.
Several members of the Stephen Foster Neighborhood Association were present
at that meeting and expressed their concerns with noise from the Koppers site.

The Association presented the Committee with a petition from 57 of its members
regarding the adverse impact from noise at Koppers and requested the City hire
a professional company to do a compliance study.

The Committee suggested negotiating with Koppers, as part of the mediation, to
fund the requested noise study.

RECOMMENDATION:

The City Commission direct staff to negotiate with
Koppers to pay for a noise study as part of their
mediation and to share the results with the Public
Safety Committee.

Sep. 10, 2008 - September Crime Watch Meeting

STEPHEN FOSTER NEIGHBORHOOD
Crime Watch Meeting
Thursday September 11, 2008
6:00 PM

Monthly Crime Watch meetings are to discuss Police/Crime issues in the neighborhood and other neighborhood issues.

Our meeting room is scheduled for one hour, therefore we will make every effort to follow the agenda. If you have an item for the agenda, please contact Wes (Communications Director) at 371-7633 or email   wes@mediafirefly.net three weeks before the meeting. If it is an urgent item we will have a public comments time during the last 15 minutes of the meeting.

For those of you that were at our last meeting, we apologize for the loss of control and un-orderly conduct of the meeting. We were not organized and had yet to meet as officers. This month we have organized an agenda with equal input by all officers and hope to conduct a successful neighborhood meeting. Please help us by being respectful of others and following the meeting agenda. We will take comments as time permits, but please write down any concerns or comments as we will collect them at the end of the meeting and consider them for the following meetings.

Our History

In 1983 Neighborhood Housing Services, in cooperation with the City of Gainesville, began a revitalization effort in the community that is now known as the Stephen Foster Neighborhood. This revitalization effort had many facets, first and foremost was to create a sense of community. Neighborhood signs were posted, community events planned, and neighborhood cleanups scheduled. Recently there have been creek clean ups and Neighborhood Night Out walks to unify us with our neighbors.

Since property owners have a more vested interest in the neighborhood, programs were developed and funded to assist families with the purchase of first homes in the neighborhood. Over the years since the first family moved into the neighborhood, this program changed the face of this community. An area that was made up primarily of rental homes is now a diverse community of homeowners and long term leasers.

Currently we have received a $15,000 grant as part of the City of Gainesville Neighborhood Planning Program. They only select one or two neighborhoods per year for this grant money and neighborhood participation is the cornerstone of this project. If you would like to be included in working on this project please contact us.
