April 2008

Apr. 22, 2008 - Thursday, May 1, 2008 5:00 pm joint meeting of the City and County Commissions to discuss the future of the Koppers Superfund Cleanup Site

mona, could you please post the following for me?  (i think this is how i'm supposed to do this!  if not, let me know)  thank you.

Dear Neighbors and Fellow Concerned Citizens:

On Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 5:00 pm, a joint meeting of the City and County Commissions will be held to discuss the future of the Koppers Superfund Cleanup Site.  The meeting is in the Jack Durrance Auditorium (County Commission meeting room) on the 2nd floor of the County Administration Building, located at 12 SE 1st Street.

The 90-acre Koppers Site is the source of ongoing ground contamination, imminent wellfield contamination, billowing clouds of contaminated dust blowing into adjacent neighborhoods, nuisance noise, and huge volumes of untreated stormwater runoff that outfalls into Springstead Creek.

Koppers adversely impacts property values, homeownership, health, financial reinvestment, and the overall quality of life within the surrounding neighborhoods.  It continues to jeopardize the ecological health of Springstead Creek and the safety of the city's drinking water supply.

If these issues are of concern to you, please attend the May 1 meeting.  Your presence is important.

An informational/organizational meeting will be held on Wednesday April 23 in the Parkview Baptist Church voting area meeting room at 7:00 pm in preparation for the joint City/County Commission meeting.

If you have questions, you can call me at 378-3919.

Thank You,

Robert Pearce

Our History

In 1983 Neighborhood Housing Services, in cooperation with the City of Gainesville, began a revitalization effort in the community that is now known as the Stephen Foster Neighborhood. This revitalization effort had many facets, first and foremost was to create a sense of community. Neighborhood signs were posted, community events planned, and neighborhood cleanups scheduled. Recently there have been creek clean ups and Neighborhood Night Out walks to unify us with our neighbors.

Since property owners have a more vested interest in the neighborhood, programs were developed and funded to assist families with the purchase of first homes in the neighborhood. Over the years since the first family moved into the neighborhood, this program changed the face of this community. An area that was made up primarily of rental homes is now a diverse community of homeowners and long term leasers.

Currently we have received a $15,000 grant as part of the City of Gainesville Neighborhood Planning Program. They only select one or two neighborhoods per year for this grant money and neighborhood participation is the cornerstone of this project. If you would like to be included in working on this project please contact us.
