May. 13, 2007 - Assistance - Presence needed. No more continuances time to show up ,please

From Barbara Ruth:

Dear Friends and Opponents of the City Garage Expansion,
I have tried to call many of you and this will repeat the information.

Time has come to make a bold statement to the Mayor and City Commissioners...They have trusted the wisdom of The City Manager, Russ Blackburn, and the Plan Staff and it would seem that The City Commission will not intervene in the Planned Garage Expansion. We have slowed the process but -- They ( All of the powers that be in City Government it seems) seem to think that they can and will do this over our objections and concerns.
It is  incompatible and not-suitable to have such a facility abut a RSF-1 zone.... PS zoning - prohibits  by our codes and ordinances such use.  We (our committee) have a strong argument and we need the community to turn out to support our efforts. Two events are paramount in our fight.
No. 1 ....Please join us this coming Monday 5:30 pm May 14Th(don't feed the meters free parking after 5 PM) At City Hall , 200 E. Univ. Ave. in the Auditorium. Three from our committee will talk during public forum. We will have 3 minutes each and plan to ask the Mayor and City Commission to stop the project in it's tracks. We need volunteers to wear pins that show support of our opposition and stand behind us as we speak. Let's let the Commission know we don't like or want this project and the devastation it would cause for our Stephen Foster Neighborhood. It should only take about a half hour of your time and mean so very much to have at least 40 to 50 show up. please, try to make it and bring a friend.

No.2....This is really big...It will be a miracle if we stop the garage expansion with No..1... So, please mark your calendar for the Big -Big Show...!!!! Thursday,  May 24TH, at 6:00 PM in the City Hall Auditorium...a special session of the DRB (Development Review Board) will Hear the City's and Bentley Arch. & Eng. Inc Petition # 176SPA-06DB (tattooed on my brain) to Expand the Fleet Maintenance Facility/Garage and Fueling Station. Expanding it from 10,000 to 30,000 sq, feet. You have heard much of our reasoning for it's incompatibility for our Neighborhood.
It is doubtful the City Commission will pull this project by their comments to us. We need to fill the 150 seats and even have some over-flow if possible. This is the only petition on the agenda.
We have a very strong presentation- we have not as yet hired a Lawyer, but still considering this. Robert Pearce has put together a visual/power point presentation that is not to be missed. A number of Affected parties (those within 400') will register to speak ( with maximum of 10 minutes each) and there will be a general public section for further public input. We hope those who will speak will be to the point. :) If they feel we have not covered the bases well enough. We may ask for member of the audience to rise if they stand with us. The yellow and black pins will be available to show unity as before. Watch for the signs to return the week before the hearing.
Thanks for all your support and ideas in the past and for what you will be able to do with your resistance of this--poor/bad planning being forced upon us.

May. 9, 2007 - WARNING: TOMORROW'S DRB HEARING RE CITY'S FMF IS CANCELLED

MESSAGE FROM SUSAN FAIRFOREST

To all my friends, associates, consultants, allies, and supporters:

As of this morning---for the 4th time---the City of Gainesville withdrew
their petiton to expand the Vehicle Maintenance Facility from the Development
Review Board's Thursday (5-10-07) agenda, SO DO NOT GO TO CITY HALL AT 6:30 PM!

Our Committee is meeting for our regularly scheduled meeting at 7pm tonight
at my house to discuss all the latest details and strategize what we are going
to do next. All are welcome to come to the meeting, though I suspect that most
of you only want to be involved in this issue by showing up for the Hearing,
which is understandable & fine with me. That is all the involvement I expect.

If you want to attend tonight (Wednesday), call me for directions if you need
them. I am going to try to call all of you in the next few hours in case you
don't read this email in time, but if word doesn't reach you about the
cancellation in time and you do go down to City Hall Thuirsday night, then my
apologies for your expended effort.
Thanks for your continued support of my neighborhood regarding our battle
with the City about expanding their vehicle maintence facility.

Sincerely, Susan Fairforest LCSW

Our History

In 1983 Neighborhood Housing Services, in cooperation with the City of Gainesville, began a revitalization effort in the community that is now known as the Stephen Foster Neighborhood. This revitalization effort had many facets, first and foremost was to create a sense of community. Neighborhood signs were posted, community events planned, and neighborhood cleanups scheduled. Recently there have been creek clean ups and Neighborhood Night Out walks to unify us with our neighbors.

Since property owners have a more vested interest in the neighborhood, programs were developed and funded to assist families with the purchase of first homes in the neighborhood. Over the years since the first family moved into the neighborhood, this program changed the face of this community. An area that was made up primarily of rental homes is now a diverse community of homeowners and long term leasers.

Currently we have received a $15,000 grant as part of the City of Gainesville Neighborhood Planning Program. They only select one or two neighborhoods per year for this grant money and neighborhood participation is the cornerstone of this project. If you would like to be included in working on this project please contact us.
