Dear Gainesville Citizen,

Ever wonder how RTS operates?  How Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) powers your home? How City Hall “works”? The City of Gainesville’s Citizens’ Academy is a series of free classes that provide you with an in-depth and hands-on look at your City government, including the Gainesville Police Department, Gainesville Fire Rescue, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, GRU and more. Participants will experience first-hand the diverse operation of the departments that provide roads, utility service, parks, emergency response services, and a host of other services which make Gainesville the #1 Ranked City in North America.

The Citizens’ Academy was first offered in the fall of 2006 and will be offered again later this year. In order to make the next Citizens’ Academy even better, we would appreciate your input! Please fill out this short survey on the City’s website (www.cityofgainesville.org) or directly access this survey by clicking on this link: Citizens' Academy Survey. The survey will run from July 16 to July 24 and will be extremely helpful in developing and improving the next Academy.

Current University of Florida and Santa Fe Community College students can also become involved in the Academy.  The Communications and Marketing Office is seeking dedicated interns for this project (this internship is unpaid, but a great opportunity). Those interested in government, public service, community relations or just looking for a way to be involved, please contact the Communications and Marketing Office at (352) 334-5017.

Residents interested in signing up for the next Citizens’ Academy can e-mail their name and telephone number to gainesvillepio@cityofgainesville.org.  You will then be contacted with information when the next Citizens’ Academy has been scheduled.

Thank you for your valuable input, and we hope to see you at the next Citizens’ Academy!

Best regards,

Communications and Marketing Office

Our History

In 1983 Neighborhood Housing Services, in cooperation with the City of Gainesville, began a revitalization effort in the community that is now known as the Stephen Foster Neighborhood. This revitalization effort had many facets, first and foremost was to create a sense of community. Neighborhood signs were posted, community events planned, and neighborhood cleanups scheduled. Recently there have been creek clean ups and Neighborhood Night Out walks to unify us with our neighbors.

Since property owners have a more vested interest in the neighborhood, programs were developed and funded to assist families with the purchase of first homes in the neighborhood. Over the years since the first family moved into the neighborhood, this program changed the face of this community. An area that was made up primarily of rental homes is now a diverse community of homeowners and long term leasers.

Currently we have received a $15,000 grant as part of the City of Gainesville Neighborhood Planning Program. They only select one or two neighborhoods per year for this grant money and neighborhood participation is the cornerstone of this project. If you would like to be included in working on this project please contact us.
