- Under Construction: Lansdale Performing Arts Center
I drove through the Madison Parking lot in Lansdale the other day and was confronted with a large portion of the lot fenced off. The rear of the former Masonic Temple was completely dismantled and there was a large hole in the ground.

Workers are constructing the new Lansdale Performing Arts Center. The borough bought the former Masonic Temple in 2004 using state and local grants. Since then community leaders have been hard at work raising money for the new center. At the completion of the first phase of the construction, the changes in the downtown district will be immediate. The entire facade of the building that faces Madison Street will be transformed into a grand main entrance. The venue will have educational facilities and community rooms in the basement and a 215-seat theatre that is designed as a multi-use performing arts area. The center will accommodate large and small performing arts groups including art exhibitions, small concert groups, theatre performances and symphony orchestras.

The idea of a performing arts center in Lansdale is great. Development like this will hopefully facilitate the opening of other businesses along Main Street and in the downtown area. A more attractive and popular town center is crucial to maintaining and increasing property values in Lansdale. My only gripe is the design of the rear facade. I am glad the borough choose to restore the historic Masonic Facade the fronts Main Street, but I am disappointed in the Madison Street elevation. A large blank wall covered in yellow synthetic stucco will not do anything to enhance the appeal of Madison Street.
Regardless of the poor design the Performing Arts Center is a huge step forward in realizing the Boroughs long range plans of transforming downtown into a destination.
