Real Estate Business Planning Runs Deeper Than Numbers Alone

Categorized in: Real Estate

I recently travelled to Hawaii to attend Joeann Fossland's Reinvention Business Planning Retreat. It was a life changing event. (Photos here.)

There were a series of exercises that I completed prior to the retreat, including a Be/Do/Have List for My Lifetime. This was especially revealing to me and I discovered some quiet, dormant wishes that were tucked in the recesses of my brain. I find that unearthing these wishes has put me in action toward achieving several of them in a way that will see me Be/Do/Have them in short order.

Joeann constructed a reading list prior to the retreat that included The Five Wishes by Gay Hendricks and Neale Donald Walsch. The book asks a compelling question. If you were on your deathbed, would you see your life as a complete success? What would you do differently? I completed my exercise and learned a little bit more about myself.

Lynn's suitcase travelled with me to Hawaii ... and I wore her Mickey Mouse flip flops in Kona and on Waikiki Beach ... I am wearing them right now in Tucson ... I think she would like that! The Five Wishes exercise also made me think about a dear friend who passed last year. Lynn struggled for over a year with brain cancer and she reflected upon her life. She told me that there was only one think she would have done differently. She would have travelled and taken vacations. Lynn worked for many years for the Bethlehem Housing Authority and she was the most FULL-TIME REALTOR I knew when she left her 9 -5 desk at BHA. She urged me to travel, "Don't spend your days tied to a desk, for God's sake! Don't make that mistake."

Last month I was in Pennsylvania and Lynn's daughter, Michelle, invited me to look at some of the clothes and accessories that Lynn left behind and select some of those treasures for myself. (Michelle had followed some of my relocation woes with respect to my wardrobe.)

I collected some clothes and jewlery and a suitcase and a new pair of flip flops. I used the suitcase to carry my treasures back to Tucson, and I used it again to travel to Hawaii. Lynn's flip flops are showing wear from long walks on the sandy beaches of Oahu. I am taking my good friend's advice.

Joeann shared another VERY NEAT tool with us at the retreat, a Vision Board that downloads to the computer and offers a visual display of goals and dreams and wishes. I have about 30 photos, keywords, and affirmations that keep these thoughts fresh and alive ALL DAY LONG at my computer. I cannot begin to describe how powerful this program appears. It uses the Law of Attraction techniques in a digital format with my own thoughts and ideas and photographs. I will be happy to show it to you ... ask me the next time we meet at an industry event ... this is quite neat! And ask me what I am wearing or carrying that once was Lynn's. I'll be happy to share that as well.

Wow! Its great to hear that
Tucson real estate business planning runs deeper than numbers alone. In my opinion this is true. I am right to have a home at tucson valley because the prices are soaring nowadays.

I thoroughly enjoy ALL of your articles Fran, but was especially inspired by the story of your friend Lynn.

I've heard another story that was similar and thought I'd share it as well so people will truly understand how not to waste the precious minutes of our short time here...

A Young couple with 3 children struggled to keep their lawn perfectly manicured and their flowers brilliant, so it was especially distressing when the kids - along with their friends would tear it up by playing ball, riding bikes, and all those things kids DO.

The parents would complain and the kids would smile and say "Don't worry Mom and Dad - the grass will grow back"

The parents would still complain, and go repair the damage. This happened for many years until one day, all the kids grew up, went off to school, got married and busy with their own children and didn't have the time to visit 'their' parents.

Sadly the parents, much older by now, would sit on the porch, looking at their perfectly manicured lawn and brilliant flowers and remember the sound of children laughing and playing in the yard, tearing up their grass and breaking their brilliant blooming flowers.

The wished they had that back, and all they could think of was out of the mouths of babes, the words "Don't worry, Mom and Dad - the grass will grow back".

ps- WHAT you do with all of your FREE time? lol!

Fran, I enjoyed this article about business planning and especially your friend Lynn. The comments that Paula Bean made on this subject struck me also. (mom & dad don't worry...the grass will grow back) My mom was a business woman for over 40 years. She worked very hard and traveled whenever she could and after she retired she traveled a great deal more. My sister and I encouraged her. She wanted to see the world - and that she did! All over Europe, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Caribbean & Jamaican Islands and Cruises, Canada, our wonderful United States and of course, visiting her grand children. When her health would not allow her to keep traveling she had those wonderful memories and photos to share with all who would stop to listen. She has Alzheimer's now, and is in a nursing home. And, sometimes her trips are all she can remember. So I guess the moral of my story is - "Don't Delay! - Do It Today!" Darlene Kearney
