I bet I have a better turkey recipe than you

Nov. 24, 2008
Categorized in: Just for Fun

With turkey day right around the corner I see everyone writing articles on their favorite Thanksgiving recipes.  So, being the amateur chef that I am, I will divulge one of my greatest culinary secrets.

A chicken is just as good as a turkey; I found this out while trying to perfect a Thanksgiving meal for one.  I started out buying what looked to me like a softball sized turkey; I believe it is called a Cornish hen.  The Cornish must be an awfully small people because that bird wouldn't fill me up unless I had just left the buffet.

I was told that there is now a bag that you throw the turkey in and forget it.  Two hours later, Viola!!!  Easy is my middle name so I grabbed a gallon sized zip lock and placed my tiny turkey inside.  I added a few seasonings, which did not stick to the rock hard bird very well, and tossed the bundle into the microwave.  May I suggest not tossing this rock hard fowl unless you want to buy another glass microwave tray (*Bonus* saved me from having to clean said tray.)

After an hour in the microwave the tiny turkey looked cooked yet was not the crisp skinned bird that I have seen gracing the cover of every magazine this month.  Being a king of the kitchen, I quickly constructed an aluminum foil enclosure to maximize crispness and fired up the microwave for an additional fifteen minutes.  This is a fool-proof method as the bird actually caught on fire (can't ask for a more crispy bird) and the microwave actually exploded when the turkey was done.  I wish I would have known this was part of the cooking process as I wouldn't have spent the $18 on a new glass tray, but there are sacrifices to be made.

I thought that I had done it, actually creating the perfect bird for my feast.

Turns out I blew up the microwave and put a nice hole in the wall for nothing. Thank goodness KFC was running a special, like I said before: Chicken is better than Turkey.

I hope that you will take my findings and create your own feast to be shared with your family and friends.  Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours!!!
