How Does a Real Estate Agent Find Time for Blogging?

Q
I need some advice on how do you schedule your time for blogging? By the time I handle my daily business  listing and selling it is a full day plus. Our market has dropped about 5%on value, but am really still busy with buyers and now sellers want to list in March. A
lways felt I am quite organized, but having a problem here. Would appreciate some feedback on what works for you.

A Budget time for blogging just as you would budget time for prospecting or transaction management. If you want to budget an hour a week, set that time aside and plan and write your posts for the week. If you are feeling particularly pressed for time, start with an hour a week and three blog posts ... post date the entries to publish on alternate days. The posts do not have to be long ... include links to resources that are useful to your readers. Don't make it harder than it has to be. Figure out a time of day and a day in the week when you are most likely to be creative. Give yourself some uninterrupted time to ENJOY the process ... HAVE FUN with it ... weave blogging into your schedule as a time that you relish it ... not a task you prefer to avoid. The results will show in the words that flow from there. Happy Blogging! -- Frances Flynn Thorsen

There was another suggestion from the RealTalk community.

A One thought that comes to mind is that I've found it helpful to separate the process of getting ideas from the writing process.

I keep an Excel spreadsheet (just because I like Excel) for blog ideas.  When I come across an interesting question from a client, or information that I'd like to share on the blog, I write it down in the spreadsheet, including any links or specifics that I'd want to include in a post on the topic.

Then, putting the time aside is a problem.  But, when I have a few minutes, I'll pick one of the topics I've already identified and write most or all of a post.  I've found it to be much easier to get started if I've already got the topic.  And, I can take advantage of short periods of time that would otherwise be consumed trying to figure out what to write about! Hope that helps. --Kathleen Allardyce,  Real Estate Marketing, Real Estate Websites, Real Estate Marketing Blog

Questions and Answers About Blogging

Q
How many blogs should someone have and should there always be new content in each?

A You should only have as many blogs as you can manage comfortably. There should be new content in each. Consider the Categories you are using in a single blog, create a Category link URL and assign a second-level or third-level domain name to the Category tag. It will let you build content, achieve better SEO results, and manage your time more effectively.

Q I am thinking about a domain name for my blog.  North Metro Atlanta is the area I service <+/->, however there are three areas or markets I want to focus on:  Cumming, Alpharetta and Lake Lanier.  Any thoughts? -- Laurie Furem, Cumming, GA

A What are other domain names in your area?  Maybe you should think of something  Consultative rather than Geographic since you are an Accredited Consultant in Real Estate. You might want to work with that differentiator when you select a domain name.

Q Can anyone help me compile a few paragraphs pertaining to the foreclosure process for potential buyers?  I'd like to add a short post to my BLOG regarding purchasing foreclosures, and I'd like to make it very "easy to understand" for the reader. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find easy-to-understand info?

A I read a good blog post today on the topic. REALTOR/Broker Linda Davis of Connecticut shared this link on Twitter.com a couple of hours ago. Remember, if you are quoting a source on the Web, just take a very short excerpt and LINK BACK to the post you reference! I would also recommend that you search http://BlogSearch.Google.com for additional information.

BLOG TIP: Using Teaser Text Adds SEO & Air of Professionalism to Your Blog

One of the most underutilized features of RealTown Blogs in the Add New Entry section of the Blog Manager is Teaser Text. Use this function to contain a short synopsis of your blog entry. Keep it short, to a couple of sentences. Copy this text and insert it into the Meta Description field right below it on the same page (see illustration below). When the search engine spiders find this article, the search result will display the teaser text instead of the first couple of sentences of the blog post.

There are several benefits to this:

  • Additional text that is keyword rich becomes more attractive to the search engine spiders.
  • The text appears MUCH more professional. Look carefully at the Articles on the home page of RealTown.com (screen shot below). Each has a short paragraph of Teaser Text that appears below the title. It is concise, easy to read, and keyword rich. EDITOR'S TIP: Do not repeat words in the Teaser Text that appear in the headline.

Not every blog platform offers this feature. Add some Ooomph to your SEO strategy with some simple planning. RealTown Blogs is a FREE platform with lots of hidden value. Use it wisely and watch the magic that follows!

RealTown Blogs Breakout Sessions

The following are a pair of RealTown Blogs Breakout sessions. The first session is a general discussion about the platform.

The second session is, admittedly, a little painful. While Joeann Fossland was on vacation in Hawaii, I was left to my own devices to "experiment" with a large group that was unmuted. I highly recommend that you take the slider and move to the 17-minute mark to skip lots of noise and setup information. After that, listen as Florida REALTOR creates a new blog for the Miami real estate market.
