I've hiked up from the East side of the mountain several times. It's far, far less crowded and just as scenic. One note is that it's a longer hike, and if you go in the summer, it's hotter on that side - at least in the morning. The popular hike is 3 miles round trip, this one is about 4.5 miles.

You start at the trailhead just north of Big Rock Park on Mesa Rd, and it eventually connects with the service road on the east side of the mountain. Some of us were talking about getting together for that hike one of these weekends.

There's also a nice hike from Barker Way that I take sometimes. You can either go all the way up the service road, or take a much nicer trail that ends up connecting to the popular trail around the 1 mile marker.
