New Urbanism Excellence!

Apr. 17, 2006
Categorized in: Columbus In The News

Congratulations to OSU's Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture,  according to The Lantern (may require registration):

"New urbanism plan brings award to OSU"

"Ohio State's Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture's city and regional planning program won the 2006 Excellence in Economic Development Planning award for its work on plans to rebuild the hurricane-ravaged Saucier area of Harrison County, Miss."

" New urbanism integrates the components of a traditional community into a diverse, condensed area that is distinct, stylish and functional. Businesses, schools and offices are all within walking distance. Streets are pedestrian friendly and are tree-lined with hidden parking garages. Homes, apartments and condominiums are mixed in size and price to be affordable to a wide range of people with different backgrounds and incomes. An example of new urbanism that is recognizable to most Central Ohioans, although on a larger scale, is Easton Town Center."

Columbus own Easton Town Center

Harrison County Mississippi's  website has a 137 page PDF of the award winning OSU plan to download for the truly enthusiastic or curious.

New Jersey Controversy

Apr. 12, 2006
Categorized in: Odds and Ends

Why would a blog about the best in Columbus Ohio deal with an itsy bitsy eastern state's controversy?  NO! This controversy is about new football jerseys at Ohio State University in Columbus.

From OSU Athletic Department The "new" Football Jersey:

"This is the "new" Football Jersey for the season of 2006 and beyond. It is exclusive to The Team Shop until June 1st, 2006. The Jersey features the new sleeve stripe pattern, and screen print numbers on the front, back, and lower shoulder. Be the first to own the "NEW" official on-field jersey from Nike.

The Jersey is $49.95 and is currently available by phone order ONLY at 1-800-678-6022."

If you read the Columbus Dispatch this AM you know that the new OSU football jerseys are a local controversy.  Columbus takes OSU football serious.

"Most dispatch.com poll questions draw between 100 and 200 responses. The record was 433, for a question on same-sex marriage. As of yesterday afternoon, however, the jersey change had prompted 734 responses, with 79 percent opposing the switch. "

Some sample responses:

"Scarlet and Gray! There is a serious lack of GRAY MATTER in those responsible for this decision."

"I can't believe this is happening. I can't even concentrate on typing this message because I'm so angry."

"Many angry fans compared the new style with those of red dominant uniforms of Nebraska, Wisconsin and Indiana. But old OSU jerseys were all scarlet with one white stripe at the end of the sleeves."

Dealing with change is tough but  I wonder if a year from now no gray on the jersey will still inspire such emotion?

OSU it's not just for football anymore!

In case you really wanted to know about New Jersey!

You'll have to search for a controversy.
