Open Letter to a Central Ohio Rodent

Feb. 21, 2007
Categorized in: Time and Temperature

Dear Buckeye Chuck,

snowmanI was elated when you prophesied an early spring this year.  I was getting cynical thinking that groundhogs day was a ruse...  that the calendar says it's winter until March 21..... and nothing about your crawling out of bed in early February is going to change that... It had been a mild winter really anyway....

There have been times in the past two weeks though where I thought you had let us down... when the temperatures dropped and the snow fell and fell and fell and fell some more... I thought your prediction that we did not have six more weeks of winter was dead wrong...  I doubted you and P. Phil the groundhog in western  PA.

With the 40°+ weather yesterday and what is in store for us this week... you are redeemd.   Cancel the groundhog stew*......

Warmly,

Maureen

Buckeye Chuck says...

Feb. 2, 2007

Buckeye Chuck says:

"SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER?

"Under overcast skies," Ohio's official  groundhog Buckeye Chuck failed to see his shadow:

GroundhogAccording to legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow on February 2, there will be six weeks of bad weather prior to the arrival of spring; and if he doesn’t, the next six weeks will be mild.

So, you may wonder why we take our weather predictions from a rodent that’s afraid of its own shadow. While it may seem frivolous, Groundhog Day actually has a long and solemn history. "

So that means Ohio's Buckeye Chuck is forecasting an early spring?  yahooo!!!!

Yesterday... I thought this was all a farce that it was a matter of looking at the calendar to see of course there is six more weeks of winter....

Happy Groundhogs Day!!!

For me anyway the news that spring is on it's way will help me with the cold and snow we are going to get hit with now.

Ohio - Groundhogs Day 2007

groundhogOhio - Groundhogs Day 2007 if you believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny, stop reading now...

2007 my second groundhogs day as a blogger....

Blogger Fred Pickard of Pennsylvannia recently wrote :Since I'm not too far away from "Groundhog Central" I thought some might be interested in the premier groundhog day celebration held in Punxsutwaney, Pa."

Blogger Lisa Dunn of Minnesota wrote of groundhogs too... and ties it into the Super Bowl and real estate...

A year ago  researching groundhogs I came to a sad, sad realization...

February 1, 2006 - Everything you always wanted to know about Groundhogs Day but were afraid to ask

February 2, 2006 - It's fixed....

Our official Groundhog is Buckeye Chuck in Marion Ohio.

If you are not in Ohio but need to find the official Goundhog for your local area here's the list: Groundhog's for your local weather prognosticator but don't get your hopes up....

Groundhog photo compliments of Geek Philosopher he looks more like a prarie dog than a fat Ohio Woodchuck to me.. but I mostly see those dead at the side of the road, not the best photo opportunity.

Is there a groundhog conspiracy?

I was sure Buckeye Chuck would not see his shadow.  I was sure we would have an early spring... we have not had a winter... yet.

I should post a Groundhogs Day Greeting to my blog but I am so depressed.  Six weeks more of winter!  The trees are budding.  My daffodils are coming up.  Is it fixed?  Do "they"  just say he saw his shadow because it is six weeks to spring on the calendar?  Why do they get my hopes up? Did any of the US and Canadian groundhogs see their shadows?

I had such high hopes.
