Columbus Top Dog

Jan. 16, 2007
Categorized in: About

According to Business First of Columbus, the top dog in Columbus is the Labrador retriever.

"The Labrador retriever is the most popular dog registered with the American Kennel Club in Columbus and in the nation, the organization said Monday."

Business First of Columbus gives a list of other dogs popular in Columbus and in the nation.

Buddy big noseNope that's no Labrador retriever,  my top dog is a mutt.   It is time for Central Ohio dogs to register... before January 31 in Franklin County.

I need to find Buddy's rabies tag number... for a Franklin County Dog Licence.  Price doubles after January 31.

"Dog licenses must be renewed annually between December 1 and January 31."

to register online you need:

"Dog owner information including name, address, and home phone
Email address for credit card response
The dog's current rabies tag number.  (In Franklin County, a dog over 3 months of age must be immunized for rabies.  A dog 3 months of age or less can be licensed without a rabies tag number.)
Dog description including pet name, breed, age, gender, hair type, and hair colors
Breed registry number or hunting transaction/license number may also be needed
Dog license number if applying for a renewal license.
Credit card information including credit card type, credit card number, expiration date, credit card owner name, address and phone "

Questions: (614) 462-3260 during regular business hours (Monday through  Friday, 8:00 – 5:00 )

Leash Laws

dog walking

Reading Bill Melville's commentary in Suburban News "Dog Lovers must learn to live with leashes" made me wonder... "where have I been?"  Why don't I know there is a leash law controversy in Columbus. I have to admit I did not realize we did not have a leash law in Columbus.  I thought we did...

I remember a comment c.1993 in Cup-O-Joe in German Village (I believe it was the only Cup-o-Joe back then?)  A beautiful golden retriever sat on the picturesque brick pavement... (I hope it is a brick sidewalk in front of Cup-o-Joe in German Village ... or is it a brick street? and cement sidewalk?  bear with me I am painting a picture... beautiful well behaved golden retriever, tall mayor, beautiful street in German Village, Cup-o-Joe sign... )  Someone commented about the then mayor not being subject to leash laws like the rest of us common people as he stood at the counter ordering...

It was enough to convince me Columbus had a leash law.

The entries in the July 4th, Doo Dah parade about the leash law controversy would have made so much more sense if I knew of the controversy.

And I call myself a dog lover!  My two dogs have always been subject to leash laws. My leash laws.  My dearly departed dog, Sox and my present pooch  Buddy were / are both beagle mixes.  They are not off leash dogs.   Buddy and I went to a non fenced "Dog Park" once.  I think both Buddy and I were stressed by it.  The friends who suggested the outing had a lab mix.  They weren't stressed.

Buddy used to go to the Bark Park on Merchent Rd. in Delaware County.    Fenced!  Great place to run... but Buddy didn't really like all those other dogs, he did not really want to  mingle. Great place to swim... Muddy Buddy ran around the pond until his entire under carriage was dark with mud, but he would not swim.  He has never swam.  He enjoyed the people... he wanted to meet each and every one of the people. Get to know them.  Especially anyone with dog treats to share or people treats.

Columbus Dog Connection has lots of info and links to Central Ohio "Dog Parks" (most are not public parks)
There are a number of them,
Bark Til Dark Dog Park, Paws Park, Bark Park,  The Canine Companion Club,
Alum Creek Dog Park, Westerville Dog Park,  Pooch Playground

Dogster: for the love of dog!

Jul. 14, 2006
Categorized in: Odds and Ends

Dogster The same day I heard MySpace.com was the biggest thing on the web I read in Newsweek about Dogster.

According to ElectronicNews.net

"MySpace more popular than Yahoo and Google" (no link too slow)
Thursday, July 13 2006
by Charlie Taylor

"Online social network MySpace.com has become the most popular website in the US, according to new figures from internet traffic measurement firm Hitwise. "

Yesterday Buddy (my dog) became a member of  Dogster  online social networking for dogs Or maybe it is online social networking  for dog lovers.  Buddy was not socialized before I adopted him...we've tried the Bark Park... He is not bad with other dogs but he really prefers people.... he is probably better with other dogs online than in person...

If you need a dog to love visit Columbus k9 Links - Adoptions are low (inventory is up?... sounds familiar) at many of the local shelters, rescue groups, canine foster programs.  It's a buyers market...  adopters market.

Sadly it looks like there will not be a 2006 Worthington Pooch Parade.   Buddy participated every year of the Worthington Pooch Parade... last year we were running to catch the end of the Parade, right in front of Pet Butler due to my showing a house at the last minute....

Does Dogster have blogging?  Buddy needs a blog.  'Buddy's Blog'... has a nice ring to it.
