Columbus Zoo's Director Emeritus

"Should animals be caged? "

Jack Hanna, the Columbus Zoo's Director Emeritus  (at least I think Hanna is still the Columbus Zoos Director Emeritus, a Columbus Dispatch article refers to him as the former director, which he is...) was  on Good Morning America today  along with  Adam  Roberts the Senior VP pf Born Free.   I  turned on the TV this morning just as Good Morning America (do not  watch GMA usually) hae Adam Roberts Senior VP of Born Free and Jack Hanna on to answer the question of "Should animals be caged?"

Passionate arguments! Roberts angered Hanna right off the bat by lumping zoos and circuses together and by saying... and I am paraphrasing here ... 'Zoos are not educational.'

I have to agree with Jack Hanna that the Columbus Zoo is educational.  I know I have learned more about conservation visiting the Columbus Zoo than I have anywhere else.  I don't think looking at videos online or watching a television show could have the same effect, for me personally.

Of course this is all related to the tragedy at the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day.  It seems there has to be more to the story, the Columbus Dispatch says:

Did fatal tiger escape have human help?

"One zoo official insisted the tiger did not get out through an open door and must have climbed or leaped out. But Jack Hanna, former director of the Columbus Zoo and a frequent guest on TV, said such a leap would be an unbelievable feat, and "virtually impossible."

"Hanna predicted other U.S. zoos would reassess their tiger enclosures if it turns out the tiger was able to leap out. He said he never before heard of a zoo visitor being killed by an animal."

"The San Francisco Zoo is as an accredited member in good standing of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums."

Hanna referred to Zoos as "Zoological Parks" through out the interview...  and was obviously  perturbed by Roberts assertions that Zoos are not educational or 'humane. '

The Associations of Zoos and Aquariums... statement about the tragedy at the San Francisco Zoo...

There is a search for which zoos are accredited by the A.Z.A. I looked for all the Zoos I could remember visiting in Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison WI, San Diego, Columbus (Ohio of course)  and Wilmington Delaware.  I have been to one Zoo that is NOT accredited but I wondered about more... of course it has been years since I have been to some of the zoos... what I am remembering may not resemble conditions for animals at those zoos today at all....
