It's the smokescreen - Issue 4 and issue 5

No smoking SmokeFreeOhio.com

According to the media both issues 4 and 5 may pass and then there would be smoking in Columbus bars, bowling alleys and restuaurants again.  Issue 4 is a constitutional amendment.  Issue 5 is basically the smoking ban we have in Columbus extended statewide.

Joe Blundo of the Columbus Dispatch wrote:

"The situation would have been less confusing had Issue 4 been called Wheeze More Ohio, but I doubt that the measure would have polled as well.  I suspect we’re on the threshold of a new era in which any issue can pass, given the right nickname.  In fact, maybe someone should give the entire 2006 election a nickname. My suggestion: Snakes in a Campaign."

THE BIG LIE  By Dan Williamson of The Other Paper, October 12, 2006

"Joe Camel wants to trick you into bringing smoking back to restaurants. Polls show you’re falling for it."

Remember Issue 5 is supported by the American Cancer Society and Issue 4 is the tobacco industry.

Williamson of The Other paper also wrote:

"Less smoking is not the goal of Smoke Less Ohio. Any confusion about that can be cleared up when reading the Issue 4 campaign’s list of “coalition members,” including R.J. Reynolds, the Cigar Association of America, the Lorillard Tobacco Co., the National Association of Tobacco Outlets Inc. and the Retail Tobacco Dealers Association."

I am not a smoker and I have to say it has been nice in public places since Columbus and most of the suburbs have passed smoking bans. I do often go out "for a smoke" with friends at the office but I stand upwind from them.     I would hate to see confusion with the two smoking issues change things in Central Ohio.

I am glad to see that smoking is on it's way out.  Hopefully the public is savvy enough to cast their vote in favor of keeping the smoke out of public places now that it has been phased out in most areas. BN 4MySales.com

NEWELL!!  Thanks for the comment!  We have a smoking ban in Columbus and most of the suburbs, banned in public places. Restaurants, etc. are so much more pleasant now.   Issue 5 would do similar statewide. I had a client 5 years ago moving from California amazed at how many people here still smoke.  Some of my dear friends at the office smoke, I go out with them in nice weather and stand upwind.  Issue 4 is a slick constitutional amendment backed by the tobacco industry which would overturn local non smoking ordinances. Fabulous Maureen, to point out the difference in the two Issues.  For me the heart of it is this: there is the whole 'sociology of smoking' issue. Which means, after you eat or while you drink, you want to smoke a cigarette. I've had many people tell me that if they didn't eat or drink coffee they wouldn't have to smoke.  I'm not sure how good it is to mandate behavioral change through the government, but I do think non-smokers deserve protection. So I am (even as a smoker) in favor of  this Issue.  Good post!

The only time I ever smoked was trying it as a kid (both my parents smoked) then when I was a bit older when I drank. Drinking age was 18 so in college I would smoke. I got sick one night and have never wanted a cigarette since. I remember my sister and my best friend debating whether the first cigarette of the day, or the first one after a meal was best. Thanks for the comment.  Maureen
