Dec. 17, 2006 - Meme

What is a meme?  Joseph on Sellsius° Blog defined it:

"A meme (rhymes with dream) is a catch phrase representing a contagious idea that spreads virally in a culture, like transparency, Web 2.0, Long Tail or maybe unzillowable. The word comes from the Greek meaning “mimic”. In the blogosphere, it’s a game of topic tag. You answer the topic question and pass it on to others to do the same. Either way,"

Who memed me?

The theme of the Meme:

5 Christmas Ball

"5 Things You May Not Know About Me"

Numero uno:

I had a toad named Hoppity Hooper (name is from a TV cartoon) that I put in a neighborhood pet competition when I was a kid.  Hoppity Hooper won a blue ribbon! Hoppity Hooper died shortly after the competition... of natural causes.*

Numero dos:

I took Spanish from 7th grade through senior year of high school.  I tested out of having to take a foreign language in college based on my knowledge of Spanish but I can not speak it.  I could not speak it.   I sometimes respond with Spanish phrases...very simple phrases when I am talking to Hispanic people and they start speaking Spanish.  I can understand them but I can not respond in Spanish sentences, I don't believe I ever could speak Spanish.  Is four quatro? I am going out on a limb here and not going to go to an online Spanish dictionary on the numbering here*

Numero tres:

My married name was Gruszecki.....When I got divorced of course I went back to McCabe!  It was pronounced Grew Sheck ee. You said it fast and smooshed it together.... I think the accent is on the middle syllable.  Scheduling appointments to show homes I would spell my name "G-R-U-S as in Sam - Z as in Zebra - E-C as in Cat - K-I. "  When the person on the other end of the phone would say "what comes after the F?"  I would weep and start all over.  Some people and phone connections I knew I had to start out with "G as in gorilla."  I had clients who would mail me things as Maureen Gruszecasincatki or Gruszasinzebraecki... after listening to me schedule appointments on homes.. I was showing them....*

Numero quatro:

Blatimore

I learned how to sail in 1993 and went sailing on the Chesapeake Bay at the end of the summer.  We sailed into Baltimore Harbor ... and camped there one night right in front of the Aquarium.  Most of the other places we visited in Maryland were quaint little towns.**

Numero cinco:

Joseph of Sellsius° Blog wrote about going to Catholic school, wanting to be a priest, having good penmanship. I never wanted to be a nun.  I remember one of "Sisters"  talking about some of us would hear a call from God... I thought " I'll just pretend I don't hear it." ... not to worry,  I never heard it,  he never asked.  Penmanship...my second grade teacher, Sister Magdalena hit me on the back knocking me on my desk for poor posture.  I was "slumping over the desk" during the class where we were learning cursive. I was relieved to go to public school from 4th grade on.  My penmanship is not good.  Perhaps with more discipline I could have prettier writing*

To carry on the meme "5 Things You May Not Know About Me" I choose to tag:

Columbus Columbus blogger William Robbins on either of his blogs.....

Columbus Metro Agent   or Columbus Metro Agent on Active Rain

Columbus photo is mine, mine, all mine.

* Sorry no photo of the City of Waukesha Wisconsin where I had an award winning toad, learned not to speak Spanish after years of study, got decked by a nun and married my high school sweetheart.... I lived in Akron, Dayton and Columbus as Maureen Gruszecki but the spelling of my name as  Maureen "Gasingorillarusasinsamzasinzebraecasincatki"  happened in Columbus (pictured.)

** Sorry no photos of quaint little Maryland towns on the Cheasapeake Bay...  go visit.. the photos would not do them justice anyway.

Glad you shared Maureen.  The story about clients misspelling your name is hilarious.  The nuns were tough on us too. If we didn't write properly we'd have to stay after school and write on the blackboard a hundred times.  Slouching got you a whack with the ruler.  Ah...Those were the days :)

Joseph:  I had to write something on the blackboard 100 times at least once.  There were stories about the principal Sister Henrianna?  something like that using "the ruler."

Kate your penmanship site is interesting.

Hi Maureen,
I can relate with the "name" thing. One of the 5 things I should have written about is that my real name is GENEA. Cute, my mother made it up and thought it was so simple, Gene (a boy's name) and A sounding as ugh. No one my entire life got it right, so in my business I misspell it.

Sellsius and I would get along fabulously. I too, went to Catholic school even Catholic High School. Never got rapped with a ruler, though. Shame on you, Maureen. I also won a penmanship certificate. That probably grates on your nerves. But, my writing is horrible now. And I so wanted to be a NUN. I use to put my mother's black sleep on my head and had a real get-up going even the rosary hanging on the side.

Don't know why I didn't think of all these things when I had to write my meme on AR and then again after the Real Estate Tomato memed me.  I was going to meme you but found that you had already been memed.

Love how my photo is over on the right side of your blog. I'll have to talk to Jim and Mary about how to do that.

By the way, I'm very glad you changed your name back...maybe that's why the marriage didn't work out!

Have a wonderful holiday and see you in the Rain.

Teresa: Hoppity Hooper was named afer a cartoon.

Gena: I have an aunt who is Eugenia, but goes by Jean.  You wrote: " Love how my photo is over on the right side of your blog. I'll have to talk to Jim and Mary about how to do that.. "  The photos are puting  a line of code in your template...from MyBlogLog.com

I copied when Maureen Francis and a couple of others did it.

Thanks for stopping by Elena and the compliment.  I do my best.  Couldn't resist! Elena were you memed?  I have not heard a peep from my three meme-ees....  here. Actually I did hear a peep from one... just no meme.  I think this is a question for the Active Rain Ettiquette Crew.

THX for meme-ories Maureen and sorry for the breach of Blog-etiquette.

I just don’t do ‘new’ things that well, or that quickly! I had it in mind to go back to Sellsius and see what this meme thing is all about, but I will leave that for the (never-ending?) To-Do list and just say ‘thank you’ for all you do in building blog community.

And I will do my Five Things and pass the meme on (tonight, maybe).

Merry Christmas to you and happy holidays to all of your readers at The Best Darn Blog About The Best Things In Columbus OH.

I think I would get rid of the name as well.  What a challenge.  My maiden name was High.  We went by initials in high school when drugs were just beginning so I was always "Be High".  Titters happened frequently.  It was German, I have learned.  An Americanization of the German spelling.  I have never been able to trace family to Germany, though.  I thought it was Dutch when I was in school because the family kept telling me it was "Pennsylvania Deutsch" which I heard as Dutch, not know that Deutsch was German.  Not until the internet did I find out my father's side of the family had some kind of heritage other than "mutt".  I enjoyed your meme, Maureen.
