"The top story in today's Columbus Dispatch Business section had news of a new LCC, Skybus Airlines, moving closer to starting up operations. The new airline has gained financing from several well-known organizations in the Columbus area, such as the Dispatch's owners, Wolfe Enterprises."
"The airline is shooting for a Fall 2006 date for their first flight. They plan to serve new destinations that are not currently served non-stop from Columbus. It is mentioned in the article, west coast cities are a high priority for Skybus."
" Analysts are skeptical about starting a brand new carrier in the current state of the airline industry."
Of course the airline lasted only 10 months.. closing on April 5, 2008. I am sad for the 450 employees who lost their jobs.
I'd love to hear from you if you have a comment on the topic of the airlines, Skybus or the economy. All comments are moderated so you will not see your comment immediately. Thanks. Copyright 2008 Discover Columbus and Maureen McCabe
Columbus Children's Hospital... of course I mean Nationwide Children's Hospital made the New York Times today... for a controversy over Abercrombie & Fitch donating $10 million... to the hospital and naming the new emergency facility, The Abercrombie & Fitch Emergency Department and Trauma Center.
A number of childrens advocacy groups and individuals make up the coalition protesting the hospital ... taking the money? or letting them use the A&F name on the facility.... ? I know they are saying it is not right ... but I am not sure if they are saying "don't take the money" or 'take the money just don't name the new facility Abercrombie & Fitch. Quoting Jon M. Fitzgerald the president of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Foundation, the New York Times says:
“We don’t sell naming rights,” Mr. Fitzgerald said. “We as a nonprofit accept gifts to support our mission. We’re looking for philanthropic support.”
Even bad publicity is good publicity for Abercrombie & Fitch? The New York Times article quotes a member of the coalition protesting the "naming rights" :
"One school of thought holds that complaints from parents and the establishment only elevate the brand’s appeal with the target audience."
I'd love to hear from you if you have a comment on the topic of Nationwide Childrens Hospital and Abercrombie & Fitch. All comments are moderated so you will not see your comment immediately. Thanks. Copyright 2008 Discover Columbus and Maureen McCabe

Good news Columbus! It says the picture is grim for many cities but Columbus Ohio is not bearing the brunt of the foreclosure crisis Tsunami as it was painted in the announcements of the Foreclosure Forum that Columbus Mayor Coleman attended earlier this week. The communities with the darkest outlook are experiencing job losses.
The Business First Columbus article after the Foreclosure Forum says: Copyright 2007 Discover Columbus and Maureen McCabe
"A report issued for a national mayor's conference this week painted a grim picture for many cities across the U.S. resulting from the nation's foreclosure crisis, but Columbus wasn't one of them.
Greg Davies, deputy director of the city's development department, said the lack of a potential GDP loss is less an indication of Columbus' relationship to the foreclosure crisis and more a gauge of how job growth has offset it.
"I think it speaks to the strength of the city," Davies said. "Columbus, even though Ohio continues to lose jobs, continues to gain jobs ... and the cities hit the hardest in (the report's) predictions have been losing jobs."
The Business First Columbus Article said that despite the good news on jobs foreclosures are still a problem in Columbus and Davies said:
"We're trying to make people realize this is not just happening in decaying neighborhoods but in middle-class neighborhoods," he said. "People need to wake up and realize this is not just the result of somebody making a bad decision... It's a huge problem that needs to be tackled."
