"Test scores impact home buying activity"

School test scores impact home buying activity, according to an OSU study. In an article by Daily Reporter staff writer, Melanie McIntyre on July 17, 2006 wrote about OSU professor Donald R. Haurin's research.

"Student scores on state proficiency tests are not only of concern to educators, they also are significant to homebuyers, according to a recent study by an Ohio State University professor.

“While it has been well-known that homebuyers pay attention to schools when considering which house to buy, this research shows how potential buyers are evaluating school quality,” said Donald Haurin, professor of economics at OSU. "

"Haurin conducted the study, titled “Educational Outcomes and House Values: A Test of the Value Added Approach,” with David Brasington, professor of economics at Louisiana State University. "

"Haurin and Brasington analyzed 77,578 house-buying transactions during 2000 in seven urban areas throughout the state: Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, and Youngstown. "

The study was published in the Journal of Regional Science in May 2006

Columbus Board of REALTORS® President Chris Reese and an NAR suvrey of consumers were also quoted in The Daily Reporter article.

Home buyers have to make decisions about schools, location and value.
