Columbus Top Dog

According to Business First of Columbus, the top dog in Columbus is the Labrador retriever.

"The Labrador retriever is the most popular dog registered with the American Kennel Club in Columbus and in the nation, the organization said Monday."

Business First of Columbus gives a list of other dogs popular in Columbus and in the nation.

Buddy big noseNope that's no Labrador retriever,  my top dog is a mutt.   It is time for Central Ohio dogs to register... before January 31 in Franklin County.

I need to find Buddy's rabies tag number... for a Franklin County Dog Licence.  Price doubles after January 31.

"Dog licenses must be renewed annually between December 1 and January 31."

to register online you need:

"Dog owner information including name, address, and home phone

A labrador retreiver? I wouldn't even deign to sniff it's nether regions ...

Beagles clearly are superior.

And with that, I'll return to my 20-hour nap.

When I got an email that I had a comment I was trying to figure out who Tobey Dalton... was... I get the two AR Toby's confused....but "deign to sniff it's nether regions ..." was a tip off.

Beagles are on the list either for the US or Columbus or both, Tobey.   Great breed! I think you are my first canine comment....maybe not maybe Sadie has commented. Thanks for the comment.

My wife had a lab as a guide dog for many years. They are dogs of exceptional intelligence, loyalty and temperment.

I hate this trend towards the designer dogs with goofy breed names you see in pet stores.

Paul (Buckblog is Paul of it's a Paul World),

When I wrote this yesterday for some reason I was picturing a golden Retriever rather than a Lab.... and I am a dog person. I walk around asking people what breed their dog is, guessing what breed a dog is.... both breeds are wonderful dogs.  Your comment brought me to my senses.

Thank goodness I did not use a picture of a golden retriever to illustrate this story.  That would have been embarassing.  I looked for pictures of golden retrievers in my files (Buddy hangs out occasionally with some golden retrievers.

I don't go into pet stores generally.  I have friends and clients who have the desingner dogs...

I have had two mutts from the Capital Area Humane Society, great place to get a dog!

My  new tags came in the mail just last week, which is good because my owner (Toby) had lost my old ones. He's lucky I like to stick around home and lounge in the sun, rather than go roaming the streets.

I have to agree with Tobey on the tops, but I'll disagree with him on the beagle aspect :-)

As to the desinger breeds, Toby's cousin had a great comment:

Why would you pay $1,000 for a MUTT? When you can go to the pound and get one for less than a $100?

You say that as if a MUTT  is inferior...isn't part of the reason the desingner dogs are popular is they don't have the health problems that many breeds do? And I don't believe at CAHS a full bred dog costs anymore than a mutt. They did change their adoption costs some last year though... so I may not know what I am talking about.

Tobey and Toby are confusing me.  Thanks for the comment Sadie.

I'm sorry -- every once in a while the pure-bread goes to my head.

Being a mutt isn't a bad thing at all, but paying for a "pure-bred" dog that is a cross-breed doesn't make since to me.

The way it was explained to me, and this was from a vet assistant, is that they are "claiming" that these dogs have better health issues. And by expanding the gene pool - they have to have SOME things that are better. But, they don't know for certain yet.

Doggies for dollars... I don't want to offend anyone but puppy mills concern me and pet stores sell dogs from puppy mills from my understanding.  I have friends who buy from pet stores, some delightful animals.... and some cRaZy dogs.

You don't know about health issues but they are marketing it that they are healthy.

Thanks again.

Insteresting editorial in today's Dispatch about the Puppy Mill issue.

I hate puppy mills at their basic concept. Using animals as "money" and not taking care of them.

You are totally right about store bought dogs. I want to meet the parents, if possible, to see the issues we are gettting into with a dog. And while the amish guy we bought Sadie from would "possibly" be a puppy-mill, he took good care of his dogs. So I felt comfortable with buying from him. And Sadie has been a dream.

I have not read the article yet.  I will though.  I had seen something last fall on TV about many of the puppy mills in Ohio being owned by Amish people...

The book that was out last year about the guy in Florida with the dog Jake  ???  A crazy lab... I never finished reading the book but early in the book his story about going to the breeder and meeting the mother dog but having a chance meeting with the father dog and not realizing the significance was funny.  The father dog was wild.  With dogs from the pound you don't have that luxury.  Both of my dogs have "had issues" but I think it is from being sent to the pound... or maybe they were sent to the pound because they had issues.  No way of knowing.  I love(d) them both even if they are crazy dogs.
