Tagging (putting graffiti on block walls, buildings, etc) has been around for a long time and seems to get worse every day. Many gangs do this to "mark their territory", others do it just "for fun" but no one likes it because it looks unsightly, plus it's costly and time consuming to keep on top of it. Las Vegas' controversial Mayor, Oscar Goodman, has been trying to get some control over the issue and has proposed several punishments for the action. Several months ago he suggested cutting off the thumbs of those who were caught engaging in this activity. Now he's come up with a new tactic....many think he's only joking but Mayor Goodman says he's dead serious. He wants put convicted graffiti artists in stockades and let the public dab paint on their faces. He feels the medieval stockades will send a message to would-be spray painters. He has asked the city attorney's office to see if this is 'cruel and unusual punishment'. The ACLU says the stockades could be unconstitutional! |
Elections ComingPosted at 3:46 PM, Jul. 28, 2006
Early Voting is July 29th – August 11th.
The General Election is just around the corner (November 7th)! Make sure you are prepared. When in doubt. . . fill it out! If you have moved or didn't vote in the last election cycle, you are encouraged to re-register with your County Registrar. For information for all Nevada County Registrars, click here. In most counties you have several options for registering to vote Nothing Stays the Same!Posted at 8:17 PM, Jul. 25, 2006Getting a marriage license in Las Vegas has always been a pretty easy task. But may be no more! Currently the Clark County Marriage License Bureau is open 24/7. But it's looking like that may soon come to an end. No money is the culprit.....the proposed hours are from 8am until midnight daily. Will the 70+ wedding chapels object? So far not. August 16th there is a public hearing we will see what happens then! If this goes in effect it will save the county some $150,000 a year in staff and overtime fees. My husband and I came to Las Vegas to marry in 1964. I don't think we ever gave it it thought that it might be open 24/7. Who wants to be at the marriage license bureau in the middle of the night??? I can't imagine this change, if it goes in effect, will make a lot of difference to the people needing the services. Sprint-Embarq: Are You Being Overcharged?Posted at 2:45 PM, Jul. 17, 2006
On my cell phone, as on most cell phones, there is/was 'unlimited minutes' after 9pm at night. I opted to pay an additional $5.00 a month to have my unlimited time-frame start at 7pm. Several months ago, about the time of the merge, I noticed advertising on television and on Sprint-Embarq's web site that their unlimited time for everyone is now 7pm. I think ''that's nice" and go on my merry way. Low and behold a couple months later I'm looking at my bill and notice that I am still being charged for that $5 per month. So I go to the Sprint-Embarq web site and send an e-mail to customer service. Their response to this? "The plans are not automatically upgraded by the system. They are upgraded only at the request of the customers. Therefore, the existing customers do not get this feature automatically added but only at their
request."
Nice, eh? NOT. Great "customer service?" NOT
Just be forewarned and if you had previously chosen this option either call or e-mail Embarq and let them know you want this monthly charge eliminated from your bill.
Safety TipPosted at 1:28 PM, Jul. 14, 2006This is a really cool idea.Next time you come home for the night and you go to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Start keeping your car keys next to your bed on the night stand when you go to bed at night. If you think someone is trying to get into your house, or if you hear a noise outside your house, just press the panic alarm on your car key chain. Test it! It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar or rapist won't stick around.....after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. Try yours to make sure it works before you rely on it. Just know that you must press the alarm button again to turn it off. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there..... { Last Page } { Next Page } |
